Hi there,

My name is Sasha and I am final year Psychology student at the University of Bath. For my undergraduate dissertation project, I am conducting a study which investigates caregivers’ experience caring for a male with an eating disorder.

If you are a caregiver for a male patient, or know somebody who is, I would really appreciate if you could 10-15 minutes out of your day to complete/share the survey below. This will involve answering some multiple choice and open response questions about your experience. I would love to hear from you and truly value every response.😊As someone with previous experience of an ED and the impact it can have on families, I really want to use my research to make a positive difference.

Please note that you must be 18+ and living in the UK at the time of any eating disorder treatment.

Completed for you. interesting that your list of EDs on the back page doesn’t mention ARFID. If you’re interested in knowing more about ARFID for your research, please feel free to DM me.

In case you haven’t seen this, it’s a brilliant short video explaining ARFID and might be a useful resource in your research…

Hi Verbena,

Apologies for only replying now, I have had some problems with notifications on Mumsnet and only just seen your message!

Thank you SO much both for completing the survey and providing me with the info about ARFID. I had not heard of it prior to starting my research but it's now something I will be considering moving forward. 😊I am actually in the stage of conducting interviews for my project now, so I will factor ARFID into that.

Once again, thank you so much for sharing your experience and this resource. It's great as a researcher to learn about new things from participants that you don't always see in the wider academic literature. So truly thank you.

Warm regards,
Sasha

Hi Verbena17.
Having only recently heard of ARFID, I wanted to thank you for the very informative video you attached to your post this morning.
I now believe my 5yo to have the condition (rather than just being a "fussy" eater) and interestingly is showing lots of other sensory issues (clothing, temperature, sound, baths etc). The most concerning one at present however, is food...the very small group of foods he will eat (all beige and mostly low in nutrients) and the nutritious foods (fruit and vegetables etc) which he won't even attempt to eat. The video posted has opened my eyes that all the bribery and persuasion in the world won't matter a jot in this instance.
And thank you smj48 for posting too. Without your initial post Verbena17 wouldn't have posted the video! I hope you get the participants needed. I would be more than happy to take part but as I say, my son is only 5yo.

Hi Vegetabesupreme,

Thank you, that's very kind. I am glad that you, like me, found the ARFID video informative! 😊

Unfortunately one of the study requirements is that your son has a confirmed ED diagnosis and has had/is having ED treatment, so from the sounds of things you would not meet the criteria at this point in time. I do really appreciate you taking the time to read my original post, and am glad that it has sparked conversation.
I hope your son gets the support he needs moving forwards.

Warm regards,
Sasha

Thanks @smj48 & @Vegetablesupreme glad the video was helpful.
If you need any more info @smj48 , the Evelina Hospital and Great Ormond Street both have leading ARFID research and treatment going on and so may be helpful if you contacted their ED departments.
