Hi all I'm new here so hope I'm posting correctly. I feel so silly writing this but I really need some help.
For as-long as I can remember I haven't eaten anything remotely healthy even growing up I don't remember having salad fruit etc.
I'm now mid twenties and physically can't swallow anything healthy and I just don't know what to do? I do feel like an idiot positing this but I don't know where else to start? I haven't been to the doctors because I feel this is so silly.
I've literally forced myself to try salad or fruit and I just can't swallow it, it's like a gag reflex. I'm driving myself mad now and really need to sort myself out.
I'm posting to see if anyone has had has this or has any information for me. Or just to tel me if I'm being ridiculous. Thanks xx

Firstly, don't feel silly and go to the GP.
It doesn't help that you didn't have healthier foods when you were younger (no judgement).
You're kind of set in your ways.
How about try a smoothie with all the healthy stuff in?

This sounds like the very real fear of new foods that many children have. I was like this as a kid and only came out of it in my late teens, early adulthood and it was gradual. Rather than trying raw salad and fruit, would it be easier to approach healthy foods more gradually? Eg start off with tinned fruit or fruit corner type yogurts, fruit desserts etc. Yes, they’re full of sugar but it’s about getting used to new tastes and textures and the sugar makes that easier. For veg, you don’t need to eat salad, you could try soup or other foods with easier textures. Curries, pasta sauce with added veg (that’s cooked until soft), stews, can all be healthy and give you the veg you need. If you do want to stick with salad, try things like tabouli where the veg are chopped fine and there is plenty of lemon so it doesn’t just taste of veg.

Take it slow, don’t beat yourself up if you don’t like something, just move on the next thing. Take note of the things you do like and take it from there!

Incidentally, there are still some textures I can’t stand (hard boiled eggs Confused). I eat most things so figure life is too short to force myself to eat things I really can’t stand.

Thank you so much for your reply I really appreciate it does seem like a child thing, I will definitely take all your advice on board and think I will certainly try with the tinned fruit. Thanks again xxx

I have this! I sometimes wonder if it’s an eating disorder, it’s like a mental block which won’t allow me to eat healthy. I desperately want to but ... can’t ? It’s so frustrating! I also have issues with dates too 😳

Definitely go to the gp to check vitamin levels etc - are you taking supplements? It sounds like a condition to me - aversion to certain textures and they may have some ideas and ways to mitigate the impact.

worldweary45 · 18/01/2020 21:13

Sounds very much like ARFID

Think it stands for avoidant restrictive food intake disorder

My daughter has it and it's a very real problem

Please see your gp

Apileofballyhoo · 18/01/2020 21:20

My cousin also had this, OP. Go to your GP.

Hey all thanks you so much for all the replies I honestly just feel silly going but I will call tomorrow and book an appointment. I spoke to my old doctors about it this was a few years ago and she pretty much just laughed and said you need to wean yourself in but I've tried and tried and I physically can't. No one seems to understand that's it's so real to me there just like eat it you'll be fine but I can't I've also started doing it with meat and fish now I think I'm sending myself insane. I'm so happy it's not just me if you understand what I mean (I'm not glad others have it!) thank you all so much for replying xxxx

Sorry forgot to add no I'm not taking anything which I don't think helps either. And I try so hard to do it but it's like I'm chewing and chewing and nothing is happening. I just want to enjoy healthy food and not let my kids see what I'm like, as I don't want it to affect them too Xxxx
