short version. was picked on for being skinny as a child, so ate loads to put weight on, stayed thin till around 15/16 when finally started to plump out. got bigger and bigger and after 4 kids am very overweight. I would describe it almost as bulimic but without the purging.

I have somewhat successfully done slimming world, losing 2 stone, but after a couple of weeks or months I always slip back. I need help, I know I do. I think its more than being greedy but I really think this is how I would be made to feel if I sought help. can anyone recommend any sort of self help? or can tell me im just a greedy bitch and to stop eating.

its not that I don't like healthy food, I do, I can eat porridge for breakfast, soup or a sandwich, pasta etc for lunch, or salad. dinner can be meat and veg, potatoes.

but when I binge I eat so much its disgusting. an example, so what I ate lastnight in a 45 minute period
2 crunch corner yogurts
10 Jaffa cakes
a cheese sandwich
3 chunks of cheese
2 bags of crisps
8 chocolate club bars
a muller light yogurt
6 malted milk biscuits

I could have (and do) eaten more but my son woke up

I do this on an almost daily basis at least 4-5 times a week
I will go out and re buy packets of food so dh doesn't realise the extent of it

I am sure people will say to go to my GP but I don't feel able to at the moment, and advice would be so gratefully received though x

Well, as a former bulimic I can tell you it sounds exactly like the purging aspect. Uncontrollable shovelling and inability to stop.
Binge Eating Disorder... IS an eating disorder.

LemonysSnicket · 26/09/2018 18:52

And bulimics think they're just greedy cows too... hence the vom.

Sorry post above should read binging aspect not purging.

Have you tried hypnosis?

fishfingersandketchup · 26/09/2018 18:53

There's a forum - I used to be on it but not since I self sabotaged again but there's loads of support and I know there were some people struggling with binge eating who had found it had really helped.
Good luck OP I hope you find something that works for you Flowers

Someone has already mentioned the Gillian Riley book , it worked really well for me. I do sometime find myself slipping back into bad habits, reading it gets me back on track.

I found her idea that it doesn't really matter why we binge, what matters is the choices we are making now. Not easy, but very simple. Enjoy.

purple8pig · 26/09/2018 19:14

thank you all :) Flowers i haven't tried hypnotherapy but have tried it (unsuccessfully) for another issue (phobia)

purple8pig don't feel embarrassed. It's very easy to use food as a crutch. You seem over critical and very hard on yourself. These behavioural habits lead to low self esteem and lack of self confidence. You have enough self awareness to acknowledge your problem, and you are brave to make the changes. Flowers

I’ve had hypno recently because I had developed a habit of bingeing at certain times of the month, and being quite restrictive with calories at other times. I was sceptical but optimistic. However, she was brilliant, I can’t remember virtually any of the two hours but this week I’m due on and I haven’t binged or snacked once. I realised very soon into the initial consultation just how incredibly screwed up my food behaviour was and how negatively I was feeling about myself and my food. I reckon I need another few sessions and they aren’t cheap, but I feel so much better and more in control now.

I don’t think it matters what you eat actually, it’s about how you use food to change the way you feel and how it affects you. I never really binged on sweets or chocolate, but would just graze constantly on little nibbles of food and feel unable to stop.

Food can be an addiction.

It's physical as well as emotional.

Don't down play the physical side. Sugar, fat and salt in man made combinations are terrible physiologically on the body. Appetite hormones don't tell you your full while endorphins give you a high. I could bore you with endocrine highs and lows.

Don't think you are in control. Accept powerlessness and then you can make positive changes so you adjust your life where there is less risk of a binge.

Excersise is a great was to get a release. Even if it's a brisk walk. It's not easy like any addiction but it's a day at a time thing.
