My skinny son

Hello, hope you can help me walk through this maze with my Ds.

He is 10 years old, 152 cm and 28 kg
So a BMI of 12.

He has spent the winter in hoodies until very recently I was unaware of just how skinny he had become.
A friend had the " talk" with me and it was as if I had been blind, I just hadn't seen Him, hadn't seen how thin he had become.

So of to Drs and blood tests came back normal today.
We are getting a referral to an eating clinic!

Some signs worry me that I am now aware of.
He prevaricates a lot before meals, getting his drink just so, always the last at table to have the first mouthful, quick to clear plates.
He likes school, he has friends, and his internet time is carefully supervised.
I have no worries on those issues.

So what should we expect at an eating clinic, what happens now?

one month on and slowly, slowly DS is gaining some weight. It's two steps forward, one step back.
Weight goes on, then falls back a bit.
So so frustrating, disheartening and baffling.
I knew there wouldn't be a golden bullet or overnight turn around but, it's a slog.
So far we have only seen the school nurse while waiting for paediatric appointment coming in June.
The nurse though lovely didn't have much advice I didn't already find and use, so wait and see approach.

Hi Zanzi
How is your DS getting on? I hope he is gaining weight.

I found this thread because we have just realised that our DS is limiting his food intake and has not gained weight in recent months despite growing in height. He is 12 and is keen on sport (perhaps too much?). He eats a good dinner but avoids snacks and does not seem to be eating enough. You can see all his ribs and he looks very scrawny.

We haven't been to GP yet because he is responding to our requests to eat more, but he will only have a tiny sandwich rather than a cereal bar or something more calorific. He seems to plan his day/week around food.

I don't know whether we should continue working on it with him or are we deluding ourselves and we should get him to the GP ASAP?
