He eats his dinner and breakfast but nothing in between apart from diet coke and chewing gum (chewing gum to stop hunger I've read online). Do you think that when people with low body fat initially start to eat they lose more before gaining.

Is there any chance he could be either taking laxatives, or purging (vomiting)?

Either that, or his breakfast and dinner do not contain enough calories to allow him to maintain his weight or put weight on.

What does he eat for breakfast and dinner?

DaddyDavid · 11/01/2015 19:51

He was using laxatives but threw them away. He has porridge for breakfast and regular dinner. He doesn't eat during the day.

That doesn't sound like enough to maintain his weight. What do you mean by a regular dinner? Does he eat it with you?

Is he being seen by a GP or nutritionist?

How old is he?

DaddyDavid · 11/01/2015 19:55

Well tonight we had roast chicken. He has been referred to cahms. The only fattening thing he has is chocolate milk.

Can you work out roughly how many calories he's eating each day and compare it with the recommended daily amount for a child of his age?

Littlefish · 11/01/2015 22:50

According tothis website, your ds should be having about 2,800 calories.

A roast chicken meal is about 1000 - 1300 calories, depending on what the constituent parts were, and how much he ate.

I think it's about 200 calories for a bowl of porridge with skimmed milk.

If that's all he's eaten today, then he is way under his calorie requirement, and so it's not surprising he's still losing weight.

DaddyDavid · 12/01/2015 16:22

His diet comes to 1200 calories a day. Which is a lot under the recommended needed. We have stopped him exercising because he was not eating and starving himself to lose weight. I'm going to slowly increase portion size and try and get him to snack he doesn't snack.

Chewing gum helps with the not eating but the sugar free can have a laxative affect if eaten/chewed in high amounts. Sad
I hope ye all get help soon

DaddyDavid · 12/01/2015 16:55

He drinks three cans of diet coke a day. I think this so that he can keep his energy levels up that he would not get from food. The chewing gum makes the brain think its had food.

When were you referred to CAHMS? Perhaps give them a ring and ask if they know how long the wait is/when you are like.y to be seen?

Doesn't sound like he is eating enough, but at least he is eating. Are you sure he is keeping it down once eaten?

DaddyDavid · 12/01/2015 18:02

I'm sure because he doesn't go to the bathroom after dinner and if he does I will listen in by the door.
