Learning the Welsh language from scratch, advice please

I’m Welsh born and bred, but so close to the boarder that apart from a couple of years lessons at school I have no knowledge of the Welsh language whatsoever 😳

I think I might be able to say ‘it’s raining’

Please could you help with any recommendations for courses/sources that start with the complete basics? Thanks for any advice!

The learners who have the best results seem to use Say Something in Welsh, but Welsh language lessons in person can be good too. Do you live in Wales? If you want lessons in person you should be able to find them here learnwelsh.cymru/
Pob lwc! X

Duolingo! Brilliant but what the hell is the obsession with Owen's parsnips??? (You'll see haha)

Berthatydfil · 21/10/2021 23:00

Search learnwelsh.cymru for a mynediad course.
There are lots on offer

MrsFin · 21/10/2021 23:01

Duo lingo is good.

TherapistInATabard · 21/10/2021 23:02

I second duolingo. Whereabouts do you live? I’m near the border too 🙂. Also, I had no idea there was a ‘draignet’!

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 21/10/2021 23:54

Duolingo gets my vote too. It's a combination of a language course and a computer game, I find it much easier than conventional language classes. I really appreciate being able to progress at my own pace, go back and revise as often as I want, and just keep plodding away until it all comes naturally. Nobody laughed when I tied myself in knots trying to pronounce llyfrgell (very cruel to beginners to make them say a word that has ll at both ends!) and now, half way through the course, I can take my lllyfrau i'r llyfrgell undaunted!
I started out being unable to understand a word of the SC4 weather forecast, and just as I was getting to the point where I only had to look up one or two words, those rotters at SC4 got rid of the weather forecast part of the site.

Wow, thank you all, I didn’t expect many responses tbh, but I really appreciate all the advice! I’ve started duolingo, seems great so far, although I wish I could go back to earlier levels if I missed a certain point, (might take a while to hammer it into my peri memo brain 🤦🏻‍♀️😳)

I’ll keep trying, haven’t got to Owen’s parsnips yet 😂 (er...)

To one of the many lovely pp, I’m living in the mid Wales/Herefordshire border area, so close you could fall over the border without noticing 😳

@Stealhsquirrelnutkin please can I ask how you go back to re-do previous levels? I’m obviously an idiot but cannot find it, and might need the ‘belt and braces’ approach to hammer all the basics into my brain...

Again, thanks for all the advice

I'm doing mynediad via Zoom. It's 60 hours teaching for £30, absolute bargain. I could've paid the same for 4 hours per week but I can't spare the time. It's the same tutor and class each week, so there is continuity, and I could never have made face to face lessons anyway.

I do find it a bit basic but I felt I wanted to start again from scratch so I've got a solid base to build up from.

You can't beat having someone demonstrating in person how to pronounce fluently, teach you the etymology and give inside info on local variations. A lot of this I never learned in school.

I totally disagree about the best results. The best results according to the research come from intensive residential courses, but they generally require a sabbatical from work to do eg a course in Lampeter. Second to that, I would think that real lessons are better than SSIW, even if it's very popular.

Definitely learnwelsh.cymru/ - all lengths of courses, v cheap, on zoom, high quality teaching. You can do a week, a day, weekly…

Hello, I searched for the Welsh section of Mumsmet after watching Hinterland and Hidden and deciding I want to learn Welsh. I'm using Duolingo with Owen and his parsnips 😁

DaNiYmaOHyd · 31/12/2023 19:39

Watch S4C. The spoken Welsh varies a lot.

Here's a link that might interest you. Clic | Stori'r Iaith | Elis James (s4c.cymru)
You can have English subtitles if you need them.

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 31/12/2023 20:04

I'm planning on watching Hinterland again to see how much I can understand now I've been learning for a while. Don't think there's any mention of pannas and triongl melyn though. Might be tricky!

DaNiYmaOHyd · 01/01/2024 14:10

Was it 'pannas' and 'triogl melyn'?
i.e. yellow triangle or golden syrup?
