Welsh government and gas boilers

Read yesterday on Wales online that all houses in Wales will no longer have gas boilers by 2030.
How can this possibly be achieved with all the older housing stock and at what cost?
Green electricity will be the solution apparently. We do need to make huge changes but for a lot of people this will be completely unaffordable.

Following with interest. We have been considering paying to move our gas boiler out of our kitchen (really small kitchen) but there's no point in paying relocation costs if we need to get rid of it altogether in a couple of years!

Yes, it looks like they are going for heat pumps as replacements, costing over 10,000? And there may be grants of 7,000. But not clear who qualifies. I'd like to know more too.

I assume (note, assume) that they mean that all boiler replacements from then on will need to be the new ones??
We wondered about this when we replaced ours a few months ago. But (in England), whilst there have been mutterings about it in the press, nothing firm enough for us to have acted upon, so we have just got on with getting a new gas one. That was expensive enough!

Take our house - bog standard turn of the 20th century terrace.

Garden / yard too small to install ground source pump for 3 bedroom house.

Installing an air source heat pump - upwards of £8,000.

This is no good without insulating the entire house and replacing all radiators with larger ones (reducing wall space available)

Internal wall insulation, at least £8,000
Removing or insulating chimney breasts - ??
Replacing suspended wooden floors with concrete and insulating them - ??
Insulating roof (rather than an attic floor, so that attic is still usable for storage) - ??
Replacing radiators - ??
Reinstating or replacing plumbing and electrics, bathroom and kitchen fittings, fitted kitchen - ??
Reinstating features - ??
Redecorating - ??

Cost of moving and storing furniture and belongings whilst insulation is installed - ??
Rental costs as house is likely to be impossible to live in - ??

I may have overlooked some things.

We would need tens of thousands of pounds. We don't have that kind of money. Any scheme based on receiving benefits wouldn't apply, we have two working adults, no children.

Our gas boiler is nearly 50 years old and we had been intending to replace it with another more modern gas boiler when it inevitably eventually packs up. I’d estimated about 2k for the job. Now we are having to have a rethink.

Unless new supply pipes are installed alongside the existing natural gas network, hydrogen will only work if everybody switches. I also have my doubts that they will be able to stop it leaking out.

We haven’t the space for a cheaper horizontal ground source heat pump. A vertical one is possibility but very expensive. 20-30k compared to 2k. An air source heat pump is another possibility. 12-15k but my experience with air conditioning units makes me worry about the constant noise. It would have to run 24/7 unless we replace all the radiators with larger units.

Add to that the extra (10k more?) cost of an electric car(s).

It’s all a bit depressing.

Sorry tried to link but failed. It's reported under Environment on Wales online website.
Definitely says no-one will be using gas boilers by 2030.
Unless I win the lottery there is no chance of me (and many thousands of others) having money to change.
They also mention the current scheme to help lower income households with free or subsidised gas boiler replacement may be reduced or curtailed.

Link to the Wales Online article. It's a target. I guarantee they will miss it by miles.

Warning: like most newspaper sites, Wales Online is full of pop-ups and general crud.

It's been unclear in UK wide press if all the talk of no new gas boilers meant no new builds with gas boilers or no new gas boilers - including replacements for existing ones- so I suppose this is clearer but I don't know what our options are or their cost.

My DPs in England are having a new gas boiler now and IL also in England have gone down the wood burner route. If they expect people to make changes to gas boiler we need more information and an idea of costs to plan for.

They also need to help for those who just won't be able to afford to make any changes however much run up they're given - and not just partial grants for some of the costs which would help us but I doubt we'd qualify for.

Thanks for adding the link @Chersfrozenface

I agree there is a real 'fobbing off' culture in universities these days -- we feel it too as staff! You can't call anyone anymore or drop into an office so we also get the vague emails and no follow up.

I agree about the inability to drop in to an office but if I want results quickly I still call people. People call me.

Ignore the previous post. Wrong thread!

I’m not sure how that happened. Confused
