Test to check clear tubes?

Margo2023 · 07/02/2024 21:40

I am planning IUI and it has been recommended I get a check to figure out if there are any issues with my
tubes, prior to starting the process. Have googled a bit but a lot of results are general consultations fees as part of an overall IVF package. Does anyone have experience of getting this particular test, is it an ultrasound or internal check? Is it the same as an HSG? Sounds like a good starting point before paying IUI but have no clue where to begin! Thanks

I think that it is probably a HSG but I could be wrong. I have had all the tests, hsg, internal ultrasounds, hysterescopy before I started my IVF and as far as I can remember only the HSG is able to look at the condition of the tubes. But all of my tests were done through the NHS so private could be different

I think it'd be a hycosy? Pretty uncomfortable but bearable, costs ~£600 private in Scotland

We went through IUI - it'll be a hycosy. Declined it as allergic to an ingredient in the dye and didn't think it was absolutely necessary

Sounds like a hycosy. The most painful part of my whole IVF journey, so check if it's really necessary.

They go through your cervix and then push a dye through your tubes. They then use an ultra sound to look at how that dye flows through your tubes.

Some people find it absolutely fine
Some find it painful but bearable
Some find it excruciating

Thanks all. I had heard the HSG could be likely uncomfortable too. In Scotland so will call around. It is strange to think the cost of around £600 private is the same as IUI cost in Europe! But I am fairly new to it all and still learning my way through. Will look up hycosy. The IUI clinic said they can do an ultrasound the day prior to IUI treatment but to be honest I would rather have my tubes checked out in advance so that if there are any issue I am not getting my hopes up and have time to digest before what I think would be a pointless treatment

Sorry I meant to add, I had thought it was almost a prerequisite before starting IUI / IVF as if there is an issue in the tubes it would be good to know ahead of starting the journey. I got this impression from the Embryologist too. I have had a pregnancy before but it was 15 years ago so guess I am a bit worried about the likelihood of conception without getting check out. Thanks again, really helpful responses!

It was explained to me that HSG and Hycosy are basically the same but one uses ultrasound and one uses xray. Our NHS trust does HSG first but im not sure if theres a benefit to one over the other if it is being done privately.

@Margo2023 the costing I gave is for GCRM aka TFP which has clinics in Glasgow and Edinburgh. My understanding is they won't do IUI without it being done first.
