It's expected of me to take this in my department . Has anyone done this ? What are the pros and cons ? I'm not very academic ...

It's very intense a lot of pharmacology etc. And a lot of work portfolios essays and exams.
In my team 8 have done it 5 have passed.
In the area I'm in now there's no chance of getting a band 7 without having the qualification.
In some ways it makes work easier as you can just get on with treating patients but on the other hand it's a lot of responsibility.

I did it years ago and did find it hard but, having said that, it was many years since my studying days so lots had changed. I passed it without problem though once I learned how to interpret the titles for pieces of work! It has been very useful for work and I enjoy my role more as a result of it
One thing I have noticed is that different universities have quite different courses so one may suit more than another. There are two accessible for me - one had a course with two large essays and some smaller pieces required at the end to fulfil the portfolio requirements, the other did their course in modules and the assessed pieces at the end of each built into the portfolio so there was less pressure at the end. A friend did hers in a large city about 50 miles from me and hers was much more reflective. Maybe ask people where they did theirs and what to expect

Yes and I also teach on it.

If you're worried about the academic aspect of it, go level 6 rather than level 7. Unless you're looking to do an MSc, level 6 is less intense and your qualification is the same.
It is very intensive, ensure you have clarity on how you'll be given time off the floor for classes, practice hours etc.
Pro is obvious autonomy.
Con for me was it didn't effect my banding.

i’m waiting for the results of mine any day now. It’s been 6 months of proper hard work, the practice hours (90) were hard to fit in. I think the pros are, increased autonomy and less waiting about getting a prescription done etc. Cons - will make no difference to my pay or anything, am a B7 anyway and 8s are like hens teeth. However, once you’re experienced, companies like Babylon seem to offer very good packages 🤔
