Any advise before getting a divorce

I've been married 9 years, but I can only see it going one way. I always read threads were people advise "get your ducks in a row" but what does that actually mean? Before anyone files what should I actually be doing?

Thank you.

Get copies of things like recent mortgage statement, make sure you’ve got a marriage certificate, your own passport and birth certificate. Your V5 etc. If you’ve got children think about making sure those documents don’t mysteriously go missing once you ask to divorce.

Make sure you have copies of any marital asset documentation like savings/ISAs. There will be more I am forgetting but imagine what you’d be struggling without if you had no access to it. You’ll likely end up in front of a solicitor for advice if nothing else and they’ll be asking questions about how to divide everything up.

I think it depends on

your relationship
reason for divorce
whether you know approximately values of assets and what there is
whether you’re likely to be able to agree things between you

people always say take copies of everything, statements, passports etc- I never did and never needed them as we were able to sort out finances between us in time. ( once dust settled a little ) but that’s not always possible.

i think also have a Good view of what future housing might be and how you’ll fund your future too.
