Private investigators?

I am going through a divorce and my husband is being dishonest in his disclosure about living with his girlfriend.
On advice of my lawyer, I am trying to find a private investigator who can help me prove a cohabitation case as this is worth it for me financially. I’m really taken aback by how expensive they are and I am finding some of them a bit inflexible and impersonal.

has anyone used one who is reputable and came at a reasonable cost? Would love to hear about any experiences

thank you!

How long has he been living there? Can you check the electoral role online? 192 website?

I sometimes use private investigators for my job. They are expensive for surveillance because you need multiple people usually- especially if you’re following someone rather than just watching a house which is very difficult to do with ring doorbells and CCTV. The vast majority I work with are ex-security services or ex-military or police. They are generally guarded in conversation and won’t tell you much/aren’t chatty. I don’t know what you mean by ‘flexibility’ is that for price or how they approach the job? A good investigator who can gather the information you need following the rules of evidence so it can be used in court is a specialist who charges accordingly.
edited to add - very sorry you’re going through a divorce

Are you sure it's going to make a big difference to the settlement? If he works out what you are doing, presumably he could just "split up" for the purposes of the divorce. Even in court he could claim that the relationship just ended, particularly given the separate processes and court meetings that might be needed.

Yes my lawyer thinks it’s worth it for me. The plan is to only spring the findings on him just before court as a judge would unlikely accept they had just broken up the day before the hearing

Thank you. Any recommendations about firms? I’m in London.

About 4 - 5 months. We still own a house together and he lived in it post separation so I know he still gets most of his mail delivered there.

I bet they did.... how much are you hoping to gain financially by proving he lives with someone? Because you are likely looking at £30-50k in solicitors fees when you add it all up. Is it really worth it?

millymollymoomoo · 25/01/2026 16:50

I hate this. It Should be irrelevant because he’s still owed his fair share of assets you built up as a couple .
and of course as soon as you get the settlement you could move someone in

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 25/01/2026 17:00

My ex mil went down this route. Their legal costs were astronomical, 150k ish each.

Yes it’s definitely worth it. Hence why I am asking for recommendations for PIs. If it wasn’t worth it, I wouldn’t bother.

That’s not how family law works. Dividing assets is about the future needs of the parties. I have the children all the time, he doesn’t pay his child maintenance and he’s moved straight in with someone who has substantial wealth. I have to house and pay for his children hence it is hugely relevant.

I also have no plans to move anyone in
