Renting and paying mortgage on marital home

Has anyone moved out from marital home into rented accommodation while going through divorce process?

Joint owners of former home, which is currently on the market (not going well), and it’s highly likely the divorce will be finalised before the house sells.

Would it be unreasonable soon, or once divorced, to move out, rent a little place and pay 50% of the mortgage?

Don’t think I can last much longer….

Of course you can and many people do.

You will have people coming along saying if you move out you don't have to pay mortgage as it counts as ex has sole use etc. or that he should pay your half as 'rent' for not living there. Please don't listen to this, it could get you in trouble.

In many cases the party staying in the martial home will cover the full cost, however, mortgage is in both your names so if it's a hostile divorce you are playing chicken with your credit rating when you may need it most.

If things are expensive you can contact your bank and ask for a mortgage holiday.

You can do so

you should agree before hand who pays what

akao, beware that the person staying now has less impetus or reason to change the status quo as they get all the benefit of sole occupation. It can sometimes mean they control the timeline of sale etc as a result

Fair point which is much appreciated! I hadn’t considered it could reduce desire to move on. It’s going slow enough already

@Firstsuggestions thank you for the information, and yes value a good credit rating
