Why pay more if it’s 50/50? Kids grown up. Should be relatively straightforward is there any point in paying more. Not amicable but with his job he can’t afford to be financially dodgy.

If you can agree between you then no lawyers needed but when it’s not amicable, they might start creating excuses why they should have more than 50%.

Do you know figures like how much he earns or how much he has in his pension(s)? Is he likely to provide proof like statements for any savings and investments so you know that he’s not hiding anything?

I don’t know if expensive means better or quicker but how acrimonious is a major factor. People who lie and con only care about what can be proven and if he’s angry because perhaps you initiated the split then you need to be on your back foot.

My ex paid at least 2x for his lawyer compared to mine. They weren’t any better, and mine did their best to keep costs down. (London lawyers versus market town)

Do it through family mediation.

I’d love their contact details if you’re willing to share.

We aren’t really paying for any solicitor involvement. We applied for the divorce ourselves online and just need someone to
write up the consent order. That’s it. Probably £2k max inc all the court fees.

But we know each other's finances, we agree a split and it’s amicable.

Do your home work, particularly with regard to dividing pensions and investments.
Wikivorce, Divorce for Dummies etc
Gather all financial documentation and write a concise but comprehensive summary.

Then go and see a competent family solicitor.

You don’t want to mess this up. You only get one chance.

Thank you for responses, I will try mediation and see how it goes.
