Hi, I’m planning on divorcing my husband. I hope to buy him out of the house and think I will be able to secure the required mortgage once I up my hours at work, but I can’t do that until October. When would I need to prove that I have the ability to buy him out? Would it be at the final order stage or before? I don’t want to jump the gun but also would like to get the ball rolling so I can move on with my life. Thanks.

Most people don’t buy out/sell the house until they have agreed finances and consent order. That can take time especially if you’re not in agreement to either the divorce or how to split the assets. Are there pensions to consider? Do you know what % you’d be buying out ( is it 50:50 or some other amount ? Divorce doesn’t always equate to 50:50 either in terms of overall asset division or for each asset and it’s important to know this before you buy him out.

some people ( myself included) sorted out the house and monies ahead if this but that’s only because we agreed to keep our own pensions, savings, assets and sell and split the house 50:50 and are both equal high earners ( ie there was nothing contentious and we were in agreement to both the divorce and money)
