Feeling safe

Anyone else end up staying in the family home after a divorce. How did you make it your own (on a low budget), feel safe and secure.

Without outing myself with details, I am beginning to wonder if the STBex could be spying on me. He certainly had the know how, time and opportunities before he moved out. Is there any way to check and put my mind at ease that's not going to involve spending a fortune? Thank you ❤️

Depends entirely on your house - large detached with winding drive or terrace opening onto street?
I added security lights on sensors all over (messed with the hedgehogs a bit initially tbh)
New doors / locks
Chains on both doors
Gates (wood, as high as fence) with Yales.

I felt like a king in a castle when I parked on drive and bolted the gates!

There's a whole other lot of stuff for inside though, if you shared a house.
Sounds extreme, but I'd find someone to check for bugs and cameras.
Exes are crackers.

First thing I did was install a wireless alarm system.

Not for former husband reasons, we've always been amicable, but because my house backs onto fields and I was alone with a young dd.

£350, installed it myself, including motion sensors, door alarms on house doors, garage and shed, cameras etc. Felt very accomplished and safe afterwards!

Is there any chance he’s left any hidden cameras about?

jolo252 · 07/06/2025 20:17

The cameras would need to either be connected to your broadband or have their own SIM card/mifi device which is more costly to him but harder for you to detect.
Ask someone to login to your router and get the list of devices that are attached to it, then start working out what they are. They will all have a unique MAC address, the first 6 digits indicate the manufacturer. Hope this helps x

I am in the middle of working and trying to juggle keeping a roof over my head so had pushed the thought of being spied on to the back of my mind. I don't have any free money to check this out as just about keeping roof over my head but yes definitely it is possible he bugged the place 🤔

I have a new broadband supplier as he took sky in his name to his new address. So hopefully its not connected to broadband. As for the other option, I don't understand it but will try to have a tech friend to check it out.

I definitely intend to get the locks changed once the divorce is finalised.

I never ever thought the man I loved would end up making me feel so uncomfortable in my own home 😣
