My husband and I have been together 3 years. He is still in the long court process of selling the home he owns with his ex. His child still lives in this house.
universal credit now want to see our last 3 years bank statements.
Does this other class as an asset? I’d been told it didn’t as his child lived there still.
I’m really worried now.

Thanks

I'm pretty certain you cannot claim if you own a second home - after 12 months grace period post divorce.

Sofiewoo · 14/05/2025 18:48

Of course it’s an asset, his child living there doesn’t negate that.

fuckislessoffensivethanpardon · 14/05/2025 18:51

A second home counts as an asset. I'm not aware you claim uc with second home.

dddilemma · 14/05/2025 18:54

There can be exceptions but it's usually for just a sale to be done, say 6 months discarded. Best asking universal credit essentials - great charity

Overthebow · 14/05/2025 19:02

Surely it counts as an asset and he can’t claim.

If the ex is now a lone parent, the property can be disregarded, I think. But you need proper advice OP.

Here are the regs, see para 5 re: lone parents.

I think that is a bit fuzzy. Here's the link.

Thanks so much. Uc have now confirmed that they are disregarding it but for some reason they want to see all our bank statements since the claim started 3 years ago.

I would assume it will be seen as an asset as a source of income to live off rather than claiming UC?

However if ex and child live there maybe there are different rules?

Best to ask UC really. Xxx

Does the ex live there as a single parent? If yes, it is disregarded.
