Court coming up - what do I wear?

I have court in 3 weeks time to try and sort out some kind of financial settlement. I don’t want to go to court as I don’t want to have to see him face to face. But I know he will find it a lot harder.
I’ve seen him on social media and I’ve driven past him (he didn’t see me). But other than that I’ve had no face to face contact in 7 months. He hasn’t seen me since the beginning of October!

We are where we are because of his affair after 25 years of marriage. He tried to come back to me (asking on phone calls) but I refused to see him as definately didn’t want him back in my life.

I am soooo much happier these days, finally. However I know he isn’t.

I want to go to court and look confident in my own skin without being too confident if that makes sense. I want him to break and realise what he lost.

I have also got to remember that I need to look ok for the setting of court itself.

what on earth do I wear?!

I'm sure you'll come up with something fabulous with help from other mumsnetters but I just wanted to say

"looking good is the best revenge"

Good luck!

Oh and that white trouser suit is fucking awesome! Get it!

I have been hrough several financial court proceedings where I self represented. Tbh I went for the basic, black trousers, shirt and jacket in order to look smart and professional.
The only time I had set eyes on my ex over the years was in court appearances.
It is daunting to come face to face with them and the best advice I can give is if you look calm, relaxed and confident.
I am assuming you have a solicitor, so that is one less thing to worry about. Good luck.

Something that is new and that fits your shape so you feel good.
Maybe go to a department store, find a salesperson you like the look of and ask them?
What ever you choose, don't be invisible.
You've got this!

Courts are conservative and official, so black, navy or gray troursers/ skirt, white or black top and ideally a jacket. No bright colours and wacky designs or revealing bits

Thank you so much.

i really want to look amazing on the day but generally don’t do ‘official’ kinda clothes.

I think I will go for something navy 🤔

Navy is lovely.

StillProcrastinating · 05/05/2025 10:56

For me it’s hair. If my hair is good, I feel much more put together. Even in jeans.

Wear a long sleeve dress. Classic, can find a shape that flatters you and comfortable. Please don’t wear anything trendy, overly fashionable or a white suit. If you want to dress it up wear heels and jewellery and a jacket. Tea length flatters most of not all. Please don’t wear jeans, linen (wrinkly) or anything too tight. . If you want to wear trousers then wear some sort of shirt and jacket.

Thinking a fitted navy dress to just below the knee with kitten heels

Me+Em have a stunning navy dress that I keep looking at! I'll try and find it to link it here.

You will be fabulous in your own inner confidence.

As a side note it's ok to be nervous and apprehensive. But you go this.

The ONLY person you should be dressing for is the judge. A classic trouser/shirt/blazer combo in dark colours is best, whatever you’d wear to a business meeting. Just look put together but don’t try to ‘show him what he’s missing’ - it could backfire.

liquoriceallsortfamily · 06/05/2025 22:37

When I was a witness we were all told to wear business wear.

TizerorFizz · 06/05/2025 22:45

A navy dress below the knee is fine! There’s no need to wear trousers. Or dress like a barrister. The judge won’t judge based on clothes. It’s the strength of the argument that matters.
