Does anybody do 1 week on then 1 week off with their kids? does it work for you? husband wants to do this rather than 4 days with me then 3 days with him as he says its unsettling for kids and it suits his work life better.
3 kids, ages 9,12,14.
Thanks

What have the kids said?

Blondie1806 · 16/02/2025 11:27

9 & 12 year old say they are fine with it, 14 year old tells me, that she is not sure. (My 17 year old will stay with me full time as she doesn't get on at all with him) They will not say no to their dad, as they don't want to upset him, he is very persuasive and manipulative.

I'm worried if I agree and a few months down the line kids are not happy, he wont then change the days.

Are you going to court for a CAO?

Blondie1806 · 16/02/2025 11:32

no I wasn't going to do that, I hope we can sort it amicably.

I have done week on /off since the DC were 9 and 7. It has worked very well. We do change over at the weekend so there's plenty of time to make sure PE kits, instruments etc all get to the correct house before Monday morning. We also live relatively near each other for any emergency items that get forgotten.
At the start there was more logistics involved but now they are very much older they just take themselves back and forth. It also makes planning much easier for them as they get older as they don't have to work out which 4-3 cycle they are in to work out where they are on a given date in the future.

At those ages surely they can just pick and choose what house to be in? It's not like they're young kids who have no say.

Ideally the kids are given some flexibility so they can come and go within reason too, as long as it's roughly 50/50 it's unfair to expect teens to be rigid about these things. If you can amicably agree an arrangement and split the costs of raising them (things you don't need two of) then it's best for the dc

Thank you everyone.
