Pensions when splitting.

My Dh who is only a few years older than me has approximately £50k more than me in his pension. During our 20 year marriage I regularly invested more than him to try to catch up. We have similar income. Does anyone know if just the total of the pension pots are looked at or if it’s the contributions? After we split I won’t be able to contribute to my own pension in the way I was before. In Scotland if that makes any difference. Thanks.

Typically it is based on the value of the pension so on what it is currently worth.

Thank you for that. I hadn’t intended to include pensions in any split but this makes a big difference.

You need Scottish legal advice. What are you expecting from him. He isn’t responsible for your pension payments after divorce.

How big are the respective pensions and can you compare pension savings made during the marriage rather than in your lifetimes. I mean pension valuation is a complicated thing. I know what mine is roughly worth but an actual evaluation could easily put it +- 50 k of that.

I suspect, and therefore my advice isn’t helpful, that in Scotland you will both walk away with your individual pensions.
