Been apart for over 5 years, can I divorce without his involvement?

Just that really. I've no idea of his current whereabouts, only that he was back in his country of origin last I heard (about 7 years ago).
He was violent, abusive and controlling.
A few people have told me it's easy to get a divorce without his involvement as we've been apart for over 5 years.
Exactly how easy? I've been hesitant till now as never been a need for it but I've not got a lovely, supportive partner who I can see a long term future with. Not necessarily marriage. But still, I'd like to be "legally free" from the ex, for my healing process, I'd rather cut all ties.
Can I divorce whilst keeping my address confidential from him?

Yes you can keep your details from him - there are boxes to tick on the form for that, as well as for not having his contact details if you don't. The divorce is 'easy' but you will also need to get agreement on anything financial...assuming minimal due to the time but you won't want him coming back and trying to claim anything at a later date. This might be trickier and need to go to court if you can't get contact.

You can go onto gov.uk and do the application - or at least go through and fill it out until you are ready to press submit. It will cost you £593 to apply.

Thanks for responding.. Just regarding finances, he and I have (and never had) anything financial in joint names. Everything was separate.
However, since leaving him I've bought a house in my sole name. Would he potentially have any claim to that or is there a way I can keep my finances as well as address details private?

I’m afraid that joint names are irrelevant and yes, he could definitely make a claim on this as you’re married but similarly you could make claims on him . You have to fully disclose all assets as part of the process. I would recommend you get legal advice asap.

Have you made a Will? Whilst you are still married he is your NoK.
