So I had a free half an hour with solicitor who said try and sort everything between us and doesn’t feel I need a solicitor at present. Fast forward two weeks and ex has sought solicitor advice and says instructing them and also putting in divorce application online. I do not want or feel I can afford fees at present so if his solicitor sends me any letters can I just reply myself? We haven’t even started any processes yet so don’t get what he’s paying for a solicitor for. Just wasting money in my view. We have no plans to seek house for another 18 months or so and he’s agreed to rent whilst current mortgage deal is in place. What can we realistically do legally before house is sold? How soon can finances be agreed without house being sold?

Get a solicitor. I know it’s money but there were so many things I just did not know about. And his solicitor will.

if you’re divorcing now then you need to sort the house stuff now. You can’t divorce and do that after.

He's agreed to keep paying 100/50% of the mortgage and full rent for himself for a year and a half? Can't see That happening in principle.

@WhereIsBebèsChambre my ex did. Though I agree, you need to protect yourself

It depends what you want and how complex things are.

I've had two solicitors who were both shit, aggravated an already complex case and I'm no further on but thousands down.

I'd at least try to find out as much as you can before you approach a solicitor.

CAB were pretty good for signposting me to different sources of free information.

its perfectly possible to do it ( or most of it ) yourself

You’d both need to demonstrate your had independent legal
advice even if you agree to draw up your consent order yourselves.

he may just be using them to do the paperwork? Or is he trying to use them to negotiate settlement?

fir most cases good solicitors would advise they to agree as much as you can between you but that’s not always possible
