So currently splitting up with my husband and we have two children. Looking into finances and it seems the best way at the moment is for him to stay in the house and me to rent as I would get a good chunk of universal credit towards rent, however, I’m not sure where to start as I need to find somewhere I guess and then claim the universal credit but worried if for some reason I can’t then what?! Most rentals around me are £1,000 a month for a two bed which is what I need as a minimum but ideally 3. Children are 5/7 and opposite sex so think they could share for the time being.

Can anyone help with where to begin?

Will you get HB if you own a home? I'd check that first.

Will you be bought out of the house you own? Proceeds can be ignored if they are being put towards buying but it would affect UC if not.

If you've separated and finances and lifestyles are separate, you can claim UC before you move out.

Yes I believe so as the children will be with my husband and the universal credit calculator says the house won’t be taken into consideration as the children are under 16 and he’s a single parent in the house so he will stay there until there’s enough equity for us both to have a decent deposit on a new house.

Meant the children will be with him in that house 50% of the time and with me the remaining 50.

He wouldn’t be entitled to anything due to his earnings unfortunately and I can’t afford the mortgage and bills on our house even with help with UC
