Car insurance in divorce

Jeany1967 · 24/10/2024 11:38

I was married for 14 years (currently going through divorce now) and have always been a named driver on our car insurance policy. The policy was in my husband's name and we have 13 years no claims.

I'm really struggling to get insurance at a reasonable price as I've never been the policy holder but have driven the car at least half the time. Now I can't use our no claims because it was in his name only (with me as an additional driver). Our old policy was around £500 but I'm now being quoted over £1000. It's insane. Any way around this please?

Many thanks all

Who was your previous provider? Some will allow named drivers to use NCB if they stay with the same company.

Unless pp's suggestion of asking your previous provider works out, I think you're stuck. This is a well known issue with not having your own policy.
It does seem a lot though. Is your car a brand new Range Rover? Can you get a smaller car?

We were with LV insurance. My husband has spoken to them this morning to see if there is anything they can do and they said even though I was a driver it's in his name so I can't claim any no claims discount. It really sucks!

It's a 2017 Citroen. It's a 7 seater so maybe that's why it's coming back expensive but Ford 7 seaters are in a lower insurance bracket so I don't think it's just the number of seats. It's insane the cost I'm being quoted and I don't think there's anything I can do.

I had this problem too. My first year on my own was over 1k and I've been driving with no accidents for 20 years. Liverpool Victoria were cheapest for me that first year. I now have 3 years no claims. Lv wanted £1000 as my renewal! I've shopped around and got it down to £600 this year. It is crazy with my ex husband we were paying £40 a month insurance for 2 cars. It sucks big time.

Does anyone know if my husband could transfer half of the no claims to me for instance if I stayed with the previous insurer? Stuck!

I don't think so. I just had to bite the bullet and start again on my own. X

Have you had a quote with another named driver (or parent)?
When in divorced I wanted to take my ex off my car insurance and the price went up. I was told it's cheaper to have another additional driver so I put my dad on my policy.
