Marriage certificate

Morning all, hopefully someone will be able to help me.

I started off my divorce application on the gov website, all good until I was asked to upload my original marriage certificate. I do not have my marriage certificate anymore.

Not sure where to go from here.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If in the UK you can order a copy from the GRO. Best bet is to go through gov.uk so you are on the legitimate site. Should be £12.50.

Hi thanks for your reply. I am applying on the gov.uk website but it says its needs to be my original marriage certificate.

It's absolutely fine. I had to order a replacement when I divorced. Later found the original!

Certified copies from the GRO are absolutely acceptable.

Any copy from the government is the "original". The actual original is held by them.

It would mean rather than a photocopy.

Yes it is a bit confusing when they use the word original as you automatically think it's the one you received at the time. . However it also means certified copies which are copies from the Registry of births, deaths and marriages, ie legal copy rather than a photocopy.

Thank you. I have ordered a copy from GRO as advised up thread.

Does anyone know if I will need my birth certificate at all for the divorce process? I don't have this either but could get a copy if needs be.

I 100% know that stbxh has these original certificates but he won't be giving them to me any time soon.

I would order it anyway OP. It might not be needed for the divorce part but it is always handy to have. Some solicitors require them for ID checks, ie for the financials or to move/sell home. Same with passport office.

If you decide to revert from your married name after divorce, you will need it as proof possibly, ie banking, driving licence.

Ok I will order my birth certificate as well. Thank you.
