Name change back to maiden name

Hi
As above
If you want to change your name back to maiden name do you need to pay and use deed poll?
Or can you just start using maiden name again?
Thanks x

I just started using it again. Some companies were fine others were definitely a faff. But I never needed deed poll and never asked for one

Freedomplease · 08/05/2024 06:28

I changed mine using deed poll, it was only £80 and easy to do. Then I got the certificate which made is easy to change passport and banks over. They both asked for a copy of certificate before they would change my name back. Having said that, this is before my divorce is finalised. I’ve been waiting 5 years so really wanted my name back in the meantime. I think if you’re divorced you can use proof of divorce to change back with no hassle

Every institution I contacted (bank, NHS, pension, DVLA) said just tell them & they changed it, minimal fuss to do so. It helped that I never changed my passport so could instantly produce a document with original name on it, but many organisations didn't ask for passport either. Nobody asked for proof of divorce.

Thanks everyone
I guess my biggest fear is something like bank not charging it for example and then not getting paid!
The £80 fee is a lot for me ATM, but really do want to change it back
I'll have a read if the different requirements.

A lot of the problem is worrying I'll mess it up.

Note to self: don't get married in the first place!

Oh don't worry about that. If the account is already validated ie an existing transferee the bank don't actually recheck the names each time so they won't notice the name change anyway !

Just got divorced and have done this by showing my final order and copy of marriage certificate. Started with driving licence so have photo id then everywhere else, bank etc have taken copies of final order and changed it. It's a bit of a faff if you have to send off but other than that it's been easy. The only one I've had an issue with is my car finance - they want the order notarised so I've decided to just leave it as it's nearly at an end anyway and I have all the paperwork to prove both names.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 08/05/2024 08:38

My bank and most utilities are cool with having the Final Order as proof but yeah...I suppose I'll have to get a solicitor to sort out an informal deed poll.

I got my information here https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll

Change your name by deed poll

A deed poll recognises a change of name of an adult or child - make your own, use official forms, or get one through a specialist agency or solicitor

https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll

WoodBurningStov · 08/05/2024 08:38

I changed mine via deed poll, I did it via my solicitor as I couldn't be arsed to do it myself. Cost me about £120, but I do know you can do it cheaper than that. This way it's all legal and I can use the cert for changing my name on finances, and legal docs such as passport etc

RobinHood19 · 08/05/2024 08:43

Good luck with the change OP, I hope you can get it all sorted quickly.

Note to self: don't get married in the first place!

May I just correct this though. The problem is not marrying, the problem is changing your name upon marrying. It’s not a “maiden” name - it’s YOUR name!

In many, many countries in this world we don’t change our names (read: take a man’s) when getting married. Even now that I live somewhere where taking your husband’s name is customary, I will not be doing so. Why would I want to change part of my identity?

(I appreciate some have a traumatic past etc which may warrant this.)

Needanewnamebeingwatched · 08/05/2024 08:49

I just worked a letter stating that from this date I would be using "name" and got it witnessed and signed.

I took it to the bank with my divorce letter and they changed all my details.

No cost

Changed my passport the same way

Unex · 08/05/2024 10:51

I've only got conditional order. Final order will be ages due to trying to sort finances 🤦‍♀️
Starting with driving licence sounds like an excellent plan, thanks

PP I get with what you said, but in my case yeah, getting married in the first place defo the issue!!

I changed back to maiden name. Some things that were helpful (probs obvious!)

Making a list of all the places I needed to change name and ticking off.
Keeping one envelope with all the bits of evidence needed so I didn't need to faff finding bits of paper - copy of decree absolute, birth cert, marriage cert, print out of recent utility bill/bank statement showing use of maiden name, written signed statement saying I was using maiden name.
Did my driving licence first to show I was using my maiden name on an official document as this was what some institutions needed to see.

It feels like a right palaver but is very liberating when you tick off each institution. Enjoy being you again x

You can literally just print a Deed poll off the internet for free - in the UK you can use whatever name you like (for non-malicious purposes).

you can have someone officially hold it, have it registered etc. but you don't actually need to - it's just as Needanewnamebeingwatched said - just a piece of paper saying that this is your name now.

Same. Just changed it on eg driving licence etc. Never had an issue.
