Anyone reverted to their previous surname post divorce?

....and was it a pain to do?
I'm in early stages of divorce, from a man i hope i'll never have to see again. I'd very much like to go back to my maiden name once it's done and dusted - i won't be 'mrs' any more & keeping the name/link to him would feel odd - so wondering if it's relatively easy to do, and worth doing.

Married over 20 years, teen dcs who i've gently mentioned it to and they don't mind either way.

I never took my ex husbands name in the first place. I dont believe in it. All you have to do is revert to your original maiden name.

I did. Deedpoll on line, get a certificate and can use that to change all docs. Cheap too.

Mossstitch · 09/04/2024 23:51

Same as cleowasmycat, except I fell for paying £140 at my solicitors suggestion for deedpoll with copies signed by them to send out to all necessary people. Worked fine with everyone except e-on......after multiple phonecalls, emails and sending two copies separately I gave up, they still send letters to old name except they never spelt that correctly anyway🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

You do not need to pay for a "deedpoll", this is a money making gambit by the online companies which sell them. Just make your own deed of change of name - instructions on how to do this are here: www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll.

Make sure it is signed and witnessed properly, which means that you have to sign the deed in the presence of 2 people, who then also sign and give their names and addresses to confirm that they have witnessed your signature. If you sign it without the witnesses actually witnessing your signature, it will not be a validly executed deed.

I just went back to my maiden name without a deed poll. Git my driving licence done first and everything else just fell into place. It was my name originally anyway.

Really? When I changed my name back to maiden name, DVLA and passport office required certified copies of the deed of change of name in order to make the change.

I also changed my name back to my maiden name. I can't remember doing anything formal. I think I just showed the bank and DVLA my birth certificate. So no problems at all.

Yes,really. I might have had to send my decree nisi with my married name licence but no deed of name change was asked for. I've never had a passport so can't comment on that.

I also changed my name back to my maiden name without deedpoll. All I had to do was write to the DVLA and Passport Office (and then the bank, insurance etc etc) enclosing my original decree absolute (no photocopies allowed, has to be the official one) and it was done. I think it helped that I had held both a driving licence and a passport in my maiden name, so there was a paper trail there.

Thanks very much for all the information, everyone

I've just done this, my divorce was finalised in February. I sent off any forms etc along with my original marriage certificate and a copy of the final order. For the bank I just took the documents and they had record of my maiden name anyway.

Only the doctors and my car lease have asked for them to be notarised but it was pretty straight forward. Start with driving licence is my advice.

I Didn't but wish I had haunts me keeping it now but as my name was changed once already I don't want to have to change it by deed again
