He cheated and out of the blue via email he has filed for divorce. I'm not gutted happy to sign the papers etc. The thing is, his parents owned our house and I spent my own money on carpets, etc, as well as financially supporting him. Do I just leave well alone and sign or do I try and get some of this money back?
Bloody unfair I landed up homeless, although I did take everything in the house I paid for leaving him just a dining room table. Thoughts, advice?

Are there children?
What are your pensions like?
There’s nothing to be done about the house if it’s not your joint asset, is my initial thought. I could be wrong but I’m fairly sure of my statement.
That all said, I’d absolutely have a free consultation with a divorce solicitor who specialises in finances/property/pensions on divorce. Let me know if you’re in London and you’d like a name.

Has he filed admitting he is a cheating twat?

The problem is, behaviour will absolutely not come into it. I say this with rage, believe me. But it never does unless that behaviour has had a severe, severe emotional and financial impact on yourself. I’ve been through two divorces- both extremely different situations, particularly with regards to finances and behaviour. My second husband sexually abused our daughter and I had to fight with everything to ensure his behaviour WAS absolutely a big matter in our proceedings. A woman still has to use fighting claws in this world. Sadly, his cheating will be ignored.

If you have no kids, no assets, no pension, or significant savings, I’d be allowing this divorce to go through asap. I’d cut all ties and spend money on therapy and a damn good holiday in the sun rather than legal fees for a divorce with a fairly small financial pot. It’s not worth paying the cost of those carpets. But these are my thoughts and I’m not in your shoes. You have to follow what feels right.
