Do I have to have a title once I'm divorced?

I am planning on keeping my married name, as I want the same name as my kids and I use this name for my work.

Will I have to change my title with all my bank cards? Can I just get them to take the Mrs out? Or do I have to choose Ms or miss?

What about passport? Or driving licence do they have a title on them?

My Mum remained Mrs Beamursmum after her divorce. Kept her married name and still used Mrs. Never questioned.

I was Mrsvipers for more than half of my life when I was divorced. I didn't want to change my surname as it would then be different from my DCs. I kept the title as that was also part of my professional identity.
XH is now engaged to OW (looong engagement). If they want to get married, good luck to them (they deserve each other), but she will always be Mrsvipers2.

I forgot to say, @FluffyCloudsofShit, do what you feel comfortable with. No one else but you can know is right for you. Go with your gut instinct.

I never changed surname, but I went to Ms. I now choose Mx or Ms depending on what my options are. I actually hate all titles.

MirrorMirror1247 · 20/09/2023 22:27

I went back to my maiden name ( I don't have kids) and use Miss as my title, simply because I prefer it to Ms. I don't think a title needs to appear on bank cards or passport, but maybe driving licence? I think they would all have a title on record for you, though, so you'll probably need to decide on one.

You can continue to be Mrs X

FluffyCloudsofShit · 20/09/2023 22:48

@DimTwmpanau when you changed to miss did you have to actually/officially change it with all your stuff?

@vipersnest1 I just want an easy life! I can't be bothered ringing banks etc changing my title when I don't care about it.

@FluffyCloudsofShit, so leave it as it is?

StillSmallVoice · 21/09/2023 08:37

I went back to my maiden name, Ms Still. I routinely get called Mrs Still. It's not something to get stressed about, not for me at least.

Beamur · 21/09/2023 08:51

Basically, it's entirely up to you and what you want to do, or not do.

LoserWinner · 21/09/2023 08:58

Some internet forms won’t allow you not to have a title, but apart from that, you can drop titles if you wish. I follow the Quaker practice of not using a title except where it is professionally necessary and get royally pissed off when I have to use one to fill in an internet based form.

NynaeveSedaiOfTheYellowAjah · 21/09/2023 09:01

You don't have to officially do anything with a title but when filling in forms you usually have to pick one. You can pick whichever one you like.

DimTwmpanau · 24/09/2023 00:12

Sorry for not replying sooner. I don't remember what I did at the bank, etc, I think at one point I was in there and said hey could you change my title please.

I've just changed it at the doctors by mentioning it while in there.

People still send me letters saying Mrs. I also get called Mrs MrDimTwmpanau sometimes which is definitely wrong, we aren't married nor share a surname.

Meh
