DS has been very ill and I've not been able to to sit down, log in, read the petition and respond end of last week. What are my options now please?
I don't have a solicitor so I'll be doing this part myself.

First thing is to respond ASAP to minimise the delay. In all honesty, unless the other side takes steps to force you to complete I doubt there will be any repercussions, provided you get on with it ASAP.

Get a solicitor
Get a solicitor
Get a solicitor

If your husband has one, you need one too. False economy not to.

Do you mean you've not acknowledged service within the 2 weeks? Or that it's gone past the 20 week time frame in which either of you could apply for conditional order?

In practice although you're supposed to acknowledge service within 2 weeks, he can't apply for conditional order for 20 weeks so if it's the 2 week time frame you've missed, nothing will happen anyway and you can just acknowledge service now.

According to this help guide, as long as you’re only over the deadline a few days it should be okay https://iamlip.com/the-process-of-replying-to-your-ex-partners-divorce-application-defended-and-undefended-divorce/. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about to be honest xx
Until you decided to get a solicitor, maybe the rest of the help guides can help you through the process http://iamlip.com/. I used it to help lower my costs and keep me informed of what was going on/what to do next as solicitors are quite expensive and were not a long term option for me - my friend used this whilst also hiring solicitor though. Hope this can help x
