Tax credits and child benefit

Can anyone shed any light?

we receive neither currently. If DH moves out, what does that mean for tax credits and for child benefit?

I looked on the HMRC pages but one says you can only claim working tax credit if you claim child tax credit and the other sats the reverse so it’s basically circular advice.

I work 26ish hours and earn less than £40k.

I can also see that there is a 25% council tax discount. Anything else I need to know in terms of financial help?

Google turn to us benefits calculator and fill it in anonymously and hypothetically. It will tell you what you will get. I don’t think you can make a new claim for tax credits now, it’s all universal credit. (We’re on tax credits but just haven’t been swapped to UC yet, and we don’t want to be unless we have to as we’d get less).

It would be universal credit you would claim
Child benefit is separate from that do claim that too (have you never claimed CB before)

Danikm151 · 20/02/2023 21:14

You wouldn’t be able to claim tax credits you would have to make a claim for UC.
if you do a benefits calculator it will be able to tell you but if you have no housing or childcare costs the chances of getting it with a £40k salary are pretty low

You can make a claim for child benefit- do it asap as they only backdate 12 weeks

FallenFigs · 20/02/2023 21:28

Actually it’s nearer £32k pro rata.

Housing costs as in mortgage? Yes, have those.

Used to claim child benefit years ago before the rules changed for earning thresholds.

If you claimed CB before and then opted out of payment then you should be able to restart your existing claim

Danikm151 · 20/02/2023 21:40

Uc won’t pay towards a mortgage but your work allowance will be higher( the amount they take off your wages before calculating the taper)

entitled to is a good benefits checker

That Entitled To calculator is good, thank you.

child benefit only. Better than nothing, I guess.
