DH and I trying to work through it but at times feels inevitable that separation is around the corner.

He earns significantly more than I do. I’m currently on mat leave….

I don’t want to do anything unreasonable but want to be as well set up as I can be when we end. 2 dc, 3yo & 7mo. Where do I start?

Pension information, earnings information, childrens birth certificates and passports especially if either of you have family overseas. Any sentimental jewellery/items/photos etc that you wouldn't want lose can you move to a trustworthy friend or family?

Not my personal experience but a family member has been through this twice, both started amicable, both ended up contentious and lots of sneaky behaviour once final decision to separate was made.

All the best OP

Go to link at top of this talk page and download ADVICE NOW guides - cost £20 a pop but a solicitor will cost you £200+ per hour . The guides will talk you through processes, and what you need solicitor for, what you might want to use solicitor for and what you don’t need solicitor for.

There's a lot of information out there.
Gather all financial data and go from there.
Remember that pensions may potentially be more valuable than the house.

Once you feel you have a good idea of the process, compile a complete but concise summary of all assets and see an experienced family solicitor.
