Joint bank account question

iveleft40 · 30/10/2021 20:54

I have a joint bank account with my husband - soon to be ex husband as we have seperated.

We have a joint bank account we used for everything.

The account was originally mine and we added him on during our relationship to make a joint account.

I now want my name removing off the account asap. He will still keep the account as his.

How do I go about this? Is it easy?

Can't find any info.

I'm with hsbc if that's any help. I'd like to start a new account with hsbc also

Only if he cooperates with you and you both sign the paperwork.

we were with lloyds and both had to sign a form. They wouldn't take me off without his consent.

Afraid I had a bad experience with this. They wouldn't remove me without us both consenting in person in branch which he delayed for months...power games.

You can however lodge notice of a dispute on it and on any other shared finances, such as mortgage to prevent withdrawals. Regular payments out need to be stopped before you do this though otherwise they will continue.

Yep it will be the same for me. He couldn't even stop at the shop for a pint of milk on his way home from work so I very much doubt he's going to co operate in this.

Thanks for your response - preparing myself mentally

I will be doing this soon if I open a different bank as a sole account can they transfer the direct debits still and it not go across as a joint account?

You're unlikely to be able to remove his name without his signature though some banks do allow one party to close a joint account altogether without the other party present.

Your other option is to tell the bank the account is in dispute which effectively freezes it and neither of you will be able to use it (which may prompt him to provide his signature). If you do this, make sure you have another account set up for yourself with your income and any regular payments already redirected to it.

If you're planning to use the account switcher service to move your direct debits to a new account, then the names on the new account need to be the same as the names on the old one, so you wouldn't be able to use that service to transfer a joint account to a sole one.
uggmum · 02/11/2021 20:06

You may not be able to remove his name.

First direct are part of hsbc and you cannot remove a name from a joint account.
You have to close it and open a new one.
Hopefully that is not the case but if it is they will help with the transition

You tell him he has a WEEK to meet you at the bank to change the names on the account or it will be frozen and no one can use it, till he releases you from the account.
Tell him you will be at the Bank on 8th November.

Nationwide have allowed my ex to close a joint account without my consent or signature. He took all the money out and closed it online. All the Direct Debits then bounced. I'm worried sick about the mortgage now as Nationwide couldn't work out how he managed to close the account.

Make sure there is no overdraft on it
