Royal Mail redirection - help! Ex husband redirecting Mail

Ele01 · 14/08/2021 18:24

Ex husband last year redirected his Mail during a divorce, since then Royal Mail have let through 10 letters of mine (solicitor letters / bank statements / gas bills etc) my ex then opens then and then sends them back to me opened :( I complained to Royal Mail 5 times - now I’m waiting for a manager to call me back Monday regarding what can be done. Royal Mail have attempted to stop it but it’s not working any strategy they put in place for stopping my Mail get through - you can clearly see my name and it’s different to ex it’s in full view on the letter yet it’s still happen.
Now after a year he’s taken another one out but he has nothing to do with the house I was awarded the house through finances (divorce) court. It’s stressing me out that Royal Mail just delivery my stuff and then ex opens it
I have all documented Proof/ letters and photos of the continental breach of my privacy.
Any tips for me to someone to say to Royal Mail Monday to tell them they need to cancel it after all these problems. Ironically it’s hardly anything he’s getting redirected all his accounts are not in the old address he’s just doing it because he has clicked on he waits long enough some of my Mail turns up by mistake x

I think mentioning gdpr to Royal
Mail is a good start. And I believe it is not allowed to open the mail of a third party so your exh is also potentially in trouble.

More likely that he just paid for 12 months upfront and he's getting 12 months. Which I think is the max - in other words he can't continue the redirection once the time is up.

I'm guessing someone in the sorting office on the minimum wage is very hastily having to deal with a lot of redirection, and is doing it badly. Practical advice would be to explain to your solicitor (and anyone else sensitive) and ask them to send letters by email until the redirection expires.

BendingSpoons · 14/08/2021 18:41

He shouldn't have been able to take out another year unless he still has a bank card registered to your address I thought. Could you discuss with Royal Mail that he hasn't lived there for over a year?

Smidge001 · 14/08/2021 18:43

I believe you can extend the redirection for a further 12months actually, but that 24months total is the maximum.

ChikiTIKI · 14/08/2021 18:47

@murielspriggs Royal mail actually pay quite reasonably. Entry level pay starts at 25% over minimum wage.

I stand corrected - they should bloody sort it out then! Although my practical advice still stands.

I’ve found Royal Mail redirection absolutely awful.
I’ve used it for three different properties - one after a death, one after a move and one re a property inherited as it lay empty awaiting development.
I’d say around half the mail does get redirected but at each property mail of mine is delivered and I have to check and go and collect andin one house have provided stamped envelopes for new owner to send on to me. I honestly don’t know why I have bothered.
One of the properties has been redirected for over 24 months - wasnt asked for proof of anything in relation to any of them other than full names and email and phone contact etc. Oh and payment details !

ChikiTIKI · 14/08/2021 18:51

Posties can get fired for willful delay and continually making errors in redirection would fall under this.

Maybe mention gdpr, royal mail act and willful delay during your chat with the manager.

FleasInMyKnees · 14/08/2021 18:56

That's bad, can you change your address on important things and have them sent to a trusted family member or friend instead until the p.o sort this out..

Ele01 · 14/08/2021 19:44

Hi everyone thank you so much for replies I’m going through them now...gpdr is coming up as a suggestion I’m just reading up about it now, I just wanted to be clued up when I speak to this manager Monday as they seem to be the one who could get it cancelled the redirection. My ex has no bank accounts registered to home address as we went through financial disclosure and all his bank accounts were registered at his new address etc it’s obvious he just wants to keep doing it to open my Mail , he’s had all sorts bank statements / solicitors letters / gas bills etc - all clearly in my name and the redirection label wasn’t even over my name and he still opened it :(
Hoping Royal Mail pull through for me as up untill now they haven’t done a thing and any measurements they put in place like circling my name etc at the sorting office isn’t working x

Take a look at the link below. He could land himself in some serious trouble.
Advise him in writing that should he open anymore of your mail you will report him and he will have to face the consequences.
When you speak to Royal Mail advise them that they are committing an offence when they've been told about this issue previously and as such are knowingly delivering your mail elsewhere.

Ele01 · 15/08/2021 08:57

Apparently you can redirect for up to 4 years?
Thank you for the legislation link I will do refer to that when speaking to Royal Mail , I feel
Defeated on it as they haven’t seemed to care over the months even though I’ve complained and said loads of letters of gone to my ex and he’s opened them I’ve told them I have the proof because the letters you can clearly see my name even with the redirection label and he’s done this over 10 times now my ex he’s purposely opened them knowing it was mine because you can see my name but then Royal Mail are fault for delivering it first place ...I just seem to be getting nowhere this is 5th time complaining now - I’m hoping this manager that’s giving me a call does something tomorrow.
It’s causing me mental anguish continually x

Could you switch as much as you can to 'paperless' to prevent them going through the postal system?

Ele01 · 15/08/2021 09:36

@SilkandSteel1 it’s really hard that to do with everything. I have insurances etc that won’t let me go paperless. I even tried to open a P.O. Box but when I found out how much it was I can’t afford it it’s quite expensive for a personal P.O. Box. It just seems like alot of hard work. I just hope they just cease it Royal Mail. I’ve even asked them to keep my Mail which they said the can’t do - but that wouldn’t help anyway it’s when it’s being sorted in the office that’s when it’s happening like I said they have tried to put measures in place to stop it but it’s still happening.
Nightmare isn’t it?
I’m like worried continually. He’s getting statements and all sorts that I can’t physically stop being sent outs I have so much mail and accounts etc that it would be impossible to go completely paperless :(

Ele01 · 15/08/2021 09:38

They can’t hold mail but don’t seem to have a problem delivering my mail to my ex and him opening it (with proof) they don’t seem to give a damn Royal Mail...what’s the point of privacy legislation then if this is happening continually with no consequence :( xx

OP posts:
SuperSange · 15/08/2021 12:21

Can you stop the redirect? He should be bloody contacting whoever is sending to him to change his address.

Ele01 · 15/08/2021 14:42

@SuperSange he’s doing it so he can get some of my mail by accident - because it’s happened ten times. I’ve got a call on Monday with a manager from royal mail as I said if this redirection ran out and another started I need to be informed first and they called me up and said he’s put another 6 months in but what get a ‘manager’ to call me Monday. I have been through finances through the court none of his immediate mail like bank statements / car etc all the major things they are not even registered at this address that he redirecting it’s just to get it see my mail now that’s the purpose :(
Awful isn’t it x

HosannainExcelSheets · 15/08/2021 21:00

I went through exactly this. I got my solicitor to send a letter before action regarding his criminal act of interfering with my mail. Someone has already posted a link to the appropriate legislation.

I also informed Royal Mail about the criminal act of my ex interfering with my mail, in writing not by phone. They cancelled the redirection.

He was intentionally not sending on letters from my hospital and our DC medical appointments so we kept missing them and got discharged from essential services.

Ele01 · 16/08/2021 14:55

@HosannainExcelSheets I took this advice and wrote a letter and handed it to the sorting office x

OP posts:
Ele01 · 16/08/2021 14:56

I took everyone advice and also the letter advice and now it’s been cancelled! ...after all those months they finally did it and cancelled the redirection x

OP posts:
HosannainExcelSheets · 16/08/2021 15:00

Well done! That's another step to getting free from your ex's controlling behaviour.

Ele01 · 16/08/2021 15:34

@HosannainExcelSheets ... thanks to everyone advice on here I said the right things this time and didn’t take no nonsense of being told they will ‘sort it’ and then let it happen again and again, it worked as now they have stopped it straight away. Just got a call back that they will be writing to my ‘ex’ to inform them the redirection has to cease now due to ‘operational issues’ and if he isn’t happy with that tough they won’t let him reinstate it, I’m just happier as like you say it’s like freeing isn’t it? It’s been awful just the whole situation on a whole x

OP posts:
Ele01 · 16/08/2021 15:35

@HosannainExcelSheets I’m sorry this happened to you too regarding your mail. It’s perplexing why they would open mail like that x
