Financial solicitor

Hi,

I’ve brought a financial solicitor in to try and make our financial split more fair as the one suggested was seriously in his favour and, considering I have the kids (baring a couple of nights the eldest has stayed over at his), and he isn’t paying a penny towards them, I realised I had to do something to secure our future. I feel bad, as it was me who ended the marriage, but it was obvious I was going to end up with a massive mortgage while he lived mortgage free.

I’ve seen a house (online) I like in the perfect part of town (where I’ve always wanted to live) and I could afford it - even now, before the financial split was arranged - but forgot to ask the solicitor if I need to wait until the divorce is finalised or until the financial agreement is signed. Anyone know? The house is close to the school (we currently live 4 miles away) and in the nice west end. Very quirky and very me!! I’m just wondering at what stage I can view the property etc. I’m taking the youngest away for a week at the end of July but plan on getting new doors in our house on my return and new flooring in her room so it’s ready for selling. The house similar to ours - around the corner - sold within 2 days!!
I need a new car too so no sure if I dare get one now as it’ll be classed as an asset? The insurance runs out at the end of September and I have been thinking of changing for a while as this one has a high mileage due to trips down south for work.

I’m tempted to email/ring the estate agent to see if the owners would consider renting (no chain and I don’t think anyone is living there) so it wasn’t classed as an asset. Could then buy once I was in the clear. It’s very rare a house comes up in this area at that price! The price was reduced in March so it’s been on the market a while.

It really depends on him, we've bought before finalising but there's no bad feelings here!

As an aside, I wouldn’t waste money replacing doors or flooring before putting your house on the market if houses round you are selling immediately. Just put it on the market as it is and see what happens. I’d be putting an offer on the house you like once yours is on the market. It doesn’t mean you’re tied in to going through with the purchase quickly. Assuming you’re going to split the equity in your house 50/50, I can’t see a problem.

The house is fully owned now (mortgage paid off a few years ago) and I was going to go 50/50 but it has since become complicated so I’m handing things over to the judge to decide. I’d still like that house though!
