Hi all
Im applying for divorce in november, 2 years separation. Had my head in the sand a bit re finances. Weve agreed a clean break (,prob because most of the martial debt is in my name 🤦‍♀️) would like to get a rough idea of costs, ive currently got 510 in savings, hoping to do as much as possible myself.
Thank you!

Absolute minimum is the court fee, which is £550.

Anything on top is lawyers or other professionals (e.g. to value pensions) - and you'll hear differing views about their necessity in 'cleaner' cases.

Do you have to get a divorce? And why are you footing the bill?

octobersky19 · 24/06/2020 17:09

My DH divorce from first wife cost £1,000 they had no property or children together, no assets at all.

Newport court in Wales have just told me I have pay all divorce costs because I ticked a wrong box on the form when I sent it back to them.
I meant to tick I don't agree with the divorce petition but I'd like the divorce to be given the ok. I ticked the wrong box and now my ex's solicitor is demanding £1800 on top of my own solicitor costs.
It's breaking me.

Just to share, i was quoted around £1.5k for an uncomplicated uncontested divorce. Hope that helps

We had no joint assets so straight forward 2 year separation. If you're classed as low income you can apply for a fee waiver.

Smurfie12 · 26/06/2020 00:18

We filed for divorce ourselves, no lawyers just down loaded the forms filled them in and sent them to the court. Didnt use solicitors and only paid court costs of £550 was really easy and simple to do

sobersides · 26/06/2020 12:42

Depending on your income you may be entitled to a fee remission on that £550. I was assessed as having to pay just £35. I work full time so was surprised and delighted to only have to pay so little.

Thanks everyone, thats really helpful. Im hoping we can just do it online as we have no assets - but ex is a nightmare so who knows!

No kids, no assets... It's relatively easy and low cost.

But, average legal fees for divorce (most inc. assets and kids) outside of London is £10k (each).

It's actually the forgotten costs of lost wages, setting up new accommodation, and if necessary, how long (and how much) you have to maintain your ex.

How did you claim this? I'm part time and low income so would be great for me. I've already paid so possible to still get money back?

Legal Aid is available in limited circumstances. Otherwise Court fee is £550 and Solicitor's fees for dealing with the petition you are looking at between £700-£1000 - that isnt including any work in dealing with the finances and drawing up an order regarding division of assets. I used a firm in Bucks who were pretty reasonable and did a good job - www.elitelawsolicitors.co.uk/solicitors-in-chesham

Good luck and hope it works out!

Have a look at divorce-online uk. They have a range of options from totally self managed to solicitor managed depending on what suits your circumstances. Have a chat with them if you’re unsure what option you might need. I did both my divorces through them and they were great and very cheap compared to a high street solicitor. Very good if you do not have children but even them if you can agree things between you they are definitely worth a look.

Toomanycats99 · 06/07/2020 03:03

I did the petition myself - really straightforward. Costs£550. Solicitor to review form e and prepare consent £1200 ish.

Although you say you have no assets it may still be worth doing a final order to avoid him coming back to claim anything in future.
