If it’s an amicable split?

I don’t want huge bills!

Don't use a solicitor for the divorce application.
Go on the gov website and complete it yourself. It's £550 but you can tick a box to get half of it back from your ex.
Ive done it, it's so easy and took 20 mins.

How long did it take for the divorce to be final? Were papers issued to him? Did they arrive by post?

The timescales seem to vary hugely. We did it all ourselves & just paid half each of the £550 fee. Took 7 months to the day

CatyaPurella · 19/02/2020 22:56

Yes, papers arrived in the post. He was the petitioner & I think all his notifications were via email

You can divorce quite cheaply. However, make sure you get a financial consent order of if not much to split otherwise either of you are leaving yourselves open to uncertainty down the line

Do it on a 2 year separation with agreement of both parties.

File online for £550. Not sure if it's quite as easy if you have kids under 18. We have written our own financial agreement and got it notarised for £5.

We are living together but separate, if that makes sense. I’ve been in the spare room ages now.
I want to file for divorce now. Not wait. I think it would be an amicable split and we’d sell the house to give us each 50:50 (it’s owned outright).
There is nothing there and we haven’t had sex in ten years!!

I’ll pay the £550 fee myself. He won’t take notice if I don’t do this.

What about finances and custody? These need to be discussed and you should get a solicitors opinion to make sure your asset split is fair

For a straight forward divorce www.wikidivorce.co.uk have a very reasonable flat fee and a solicitor is available for a chat on the phone
beforehand if you need advice.
Plus the costs of the divorce of course £550.

I used them when I found the DIY option too stressful half way through.
