Transferring utility bills to me - what if stbx doesn’t do it?

sherlock10 · 03/06/2018 06:39

What do I do if my stbx refuses to put various utility bills in my name - that are currently in his?

So far he has not responded to my three attempts at asking him to deal with it - by text and email - we are not on speaking terms at the moment.

Has he moved out?

sherlock10 · 03/06/2018 07:15

Yes but not completely. Most of his stuff is still here and house transfer happens in a few weeks.

You can ring the utility companies yourself and give them a date for when you take/took over responsibility for them. He is then responsible up to that date, and you after that date.

Thank you.

I did ring the gas and electric people and they said he had to phone them and let them know, and that once he had done this, I could then set up my account. And that they would check with the council that he had moved out.

One of the problems is that I don’t know who all the providers are - like our landline.

It's a few years ago now, but when my ex did this I just phoned up the utilities and asked them to put all bills in my name.

Am in the same situation at the moment. Ex P says he needs 'time' to come to terms with the end of our relationship before he can deal with any of this.

I basically won’t know what to do if he doesn’t do this. Which judging by everything else he hasn’t done during the divorce, will be the case.

Take photos of the meters on the day of the transfer. The providers will soon change their tune if he stops paying.

If he keeps on paying, then happy days and more fool him.

I’ve moved house twice in the last year. Each time i’ve not known who the utilities company is, or whose name the accounts are in.

I simply took a meter reading, went on a comparison site, picked the best deal, and opened an account. The company then put all the bills in my name from that day forward, and sent final bills to the previous holder.

Job done.

Leopard12 · 03/06/2018 10:33

As reallyanotherone says don't try take over his contracts just set up everything new in your name and the new company will sort it out with the old one who will end his contract and send out a final bill.

We bought a house where the seller had failed to tell any utilities or the council he had sold the property.

We just rang up the council and they switched the council tax to us from the date we moved in.

For the utilities we looked an a comparison website, picked providers and they started billing us from the date we advised them to start.

Bills / final demands kept arriving for the ex owner as he'd left no forwarding address but no problems for us!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I was making a mountain out of a molehill maybe.

Take dated photos of the meters on the day he officially moves out. If he tries to screw you over re: the reads, i.e. gives them a wrong read so you have to pay more, you will have proof. Id contact them prior to the event, & arrange to get the new accounts set up ASAP after hes moved, with meter photos provided by you.

Are u claiming single person discount on your council tax?

Not yet but I will.

Do it asap
This then gives you a Bill in your name only

TefalTester123 · 06/06/2018 08:00

Surely if he doesn't do it then he will have to pay your bills?
