Getting divorced in Spain?

Has anyone done this or know anything about it? I am English, husband is Spanish and we live in Spain with 3 year old DS. I cannot find a decent lawyer here who speaks English, can I use an English lawyer in England? I want to go home but am so worried about the whole process - husband has history of being very unreasonable and is likely to make it as hard as possible. I have done everything I can to make the marriage work and my last option is to go back to the UK but now I feel it is my only one.
Thank you so much for any advice.

Hi,

So sorry you are going through this.

Do you know Expatica? I'm sure you can find info through that, they also have a forum.

www.expatica.com/es/main.html

Good luck!

Thank you so much suburbophobe have never heard of this site and will get on it right now! I have a small window of opportunity this morning and need to make use of it. Am feeling pretty desperate - no RL support here at all.

Thanks again for your help.

Sorry to hear your sad situation.

Wherabouts are you in Spain?

If you can't find an English-speaking lawyer, what about an interpreter?

A British lawyer won't be able to do much I suspect.

More than happy to help sadmama, I have been an expat myself, so know how it is.....

You could also try googling something like "english speaking family lawyer" and then your home town or the nearest big one. You never know what might come up.....

There's no point in getting an English lawyer, as the system will be different.

Do you not speak any Spanish at all? If you can't get an English speaking lawyer in Spain you'll need an interpreter with a Spanish lawyer.

I'm in Gandia Cies the problem is that the system here seems so geared up towards the Spanish person, I can't get my point across well. I went to see a lawyer but they said i was only entitiled to 200 euros a month and I couldn't leave the country. I am pretty sure that this would not be the answer at all in the UK. My hubands funds are all 'hidden' like most people do here.

I thought as much about UK lawyers, I just wish I could use a UK lawyer and it would be so much easier. Am scared to be honest about the whole system here. I am so worried about DS's schooling and future and just want to be in control of my life again (nigh on impossible at the moment!)
Thank you so much for your reply. It is lovely that people reply to me at all!

Thank you!

Thanks again suburbophobe and also mumblechum I speak Spanish, and can certainly understand it, I just feel SO out of my depth. I think you are right - an interpreter is probably the way forward, I really want to find a sympathetic family lawyer - it is all about agreement between spouses here, not a straightforward thing if one of you wants to make it difficult. i feel I need to get on with it for the sake of DS. If both parties are not in agreement it takes years. I don't feel I have that sort of time.
