Diabetic & Mounjaro

Hey,

I’ve just got my test results back and have been told I’m now diabetic - Type 2.

They have suggested me loosing some weight would be a start before trying any medication.
my markers were on 48, so just on the diabetic zone which the Dr suggested could come down with change in diet and Mounjaro.

Has anyone been in this situation & if you’ve been on Mounjaro then any Pros/Cons pls?

tia x

I reversed my type 2 with Mounjaro.

I have zero cons to MJ, aside from perhaps the cost, but the pros are extensive.

I have lost 8 and a half stone, reversed the type 2, lowered my blood pressure, cured my depression, I’m far less anxious than before, my inflammation has all but disappeared, my focus has improved and o feel amazing. I’m healthy and building my fitness more every week. I’m late 40s and haven’t been this weight or felt like this since my mid teens. It’s truly been life changing.

Thank you for your reply. Wow that’s all very positive which makes me feel very good about wanting to take this in the coming days. Luckily nhs will offer me this so there’s no cost to me which I’m very appreciative for.

If it's been used to treat your DM T2 then it should have been prescribed on the NHS.

I've got an NHS prescription for MJ. I didn't really care about the weight loss as I wasn't obese, but it has helped me to reduce my BMI from 27 to 21. But the important thing is that my HBA1C levels have dropped significantly. My last HBA1C reading was 39.

It’s not as simple as just having type 2, I didn’t qualify and decided to pay.

For me it’s the type 2 diabetes and BMI of 49.7 so this will help for both although it is being given for the diabetes.

If you have the time to read take a look at Rethinking Diabetes, by Gary Taubes, or The Diabetes Code, by Jason Fung. Both are pretty easy reads but explain the mechanisms behind type 2 really well.
They also have lectures/podcast appearances on YOuTube if you prefer to listen/watch.

I know that. You need to have tried other meds first. Which I did, but they stopped being effective after a couple of years.

With an HBA1C of 49 I would definitely try the Metformin etc route first before going down the road of MJ.

Sorry I misunderstood I thought you were saying I should have been prescribed it from the NHS. I am happy with my choice to pay for it. I would have probably still been waiting now to be honest and I am 8 and a half stone lighter with far less health problems than before. I absolutely did care about the weight loss. I knew if I could get that under control the diabetes and other things would follow.

AnnaQuayRules · 14/04/2026 16:28

Well done @stardqoes that's an amazing achievement.

I was in that situation ten years ago, exact same reading of 48.

My doctor advised losing weight before starting drugs. I managed to do so and have had reading in their 30s ever since

Fishingboatbobbingnight · 28/04/2026 16:08

I was pre diabetic and 85kg in Jan 24. IWith HbAc1 at 43. I started Mounjaro. Went up the doses to the max and In Jan 25 I was 62kg and my HbAc1 marker was down to 34.

Titrated down to 5mg over 5 months and maintain on that. Give or take a kilo.
No more pre diabetes
No more joint pain
No more high blood pressure

No more high cholesterol. (was 6.1 now 2.8)
No more sleep apnea.

Go for it OP. The physical health benefits speak for themselves. The mental health benefits are even better.

Mechanics of Mounjaro (GLP-1) is that is increases the amount of insulin you produce in response to high blood sugar, increases your sensitivity to the insulin, reduces the amount of glucose produced by your liver. This stabilises your blood sugar leading to less spikes and also reduces the amount of sugar your body is converting to fat to get it out of your blood. That’s why it is often used for Type 2 diabetics, and it’s really good at doing this, I was taking insulin twice a day and metformin 4 times a day and still had high sugar levels. The diabetes team prescribed MJ and within 6 weeks I was able to stop the insulin completely, 6 weeks after that I was able to stop the metformin and my HbA1C reduced from 11.7% (104 n/mol) which is twice the highest range of normal, down to 5.2% (33 n/mol) which is non-diabetic.
