Firstly there's no need to dash off down the low carb high fat rabbit hole.
Even desserts are fine, but we're not talking cream cakes etc. Tonight I had chocolate sponge. Texturewise it was like a cross between shortbread and sponge, certainly not very sweet. Yesterday apple crumble, no added sugar to either apples or crumble.

Rice here does tend to be wholemeal but small portions. Pasta, again small portions.

I've spoken to a dietician about the problem trying to eat a certain way is that unless you're incredibly motivated there will be come a time when you say oh fuck it....

Also your body comes a a finely tuned machine. Low carb may seem to work for your type 2. What happens when you have problems with your heart? Your lungs? Your bowels, your kidneys.

I'm noticing that although im not sticking to the plan (low carb high fat) im falling within acceptable limits. It's likely I'll be going back on metformin at some point as its more than just a diabetes medication.

One thing I did get "wrong" was have a glass of orange juice! Sweet child of mine 16 afterwards...

Today's treat was a hot cross bun. Unsweetened dough. All sweetness coming from a few raisins and cinnamon. It was almost savoury.

If you have the time and are interested I can really recommend the book The Diabetes Code by Dr Jason Fung, it explains the biological mechanisms behind diabetes really well.
Best wishes and good luck.

I'm low carb but not high fat. My numbers have been in the non-diabetic range for 4 years now. No problems with my lungs, heart, bowels or kidneys. My doctor and dietician are both happy with my management.

You end up with it being a way of life, especially when you think of the alternatives like needing insulin, going blind or losing limbs. I find that very motivating.

Jason Fung is worth a read as is the Glucose Goddess.

I have ckd stage 5 so for me that's my most important health issue. I need a balanced diet which is more than low carb. Small amounts of protein. Most of my nutrition is to come from the 5 a day and complex carbs. I haven't taken a diabetes med for over a month but my glucose is high acceptable which is better for my kidneys atm

Hi, I just want to quickly say that Metformin is a really great medication, but if you have stage 5 CKD then your diabetes Dr/nurse need to discuss with you if it’s appropriate to restart (in the future). It’s a drug metabolised by your kidneys, so if you have significant renal damage then it is possible that it won’t be removed from your system very effectively, leading to a build up and possible side effects from that.

Well done on how you are doing, and good luck with it all going forward.

Is there a reason why you can’t continue to eat low carb if you develop problems with your heart/lungs/bowels etc? Genuine question.
