Blood sugars

Hi mums,

I’ve posted recently about the flu and I’m starting to feel like this is settling now. However since I started recovering and getting better my blood sugars have been dropping and getting high. Had to go to hospital with a blood sugar of 2.2 I couldn’t get this up, I had 3 lots of sugar water recommended by 111 and when I got to hospital it was 4.4 so had went up. It remained good for the rest of the time, I got home at 5:30 and had some burgers, pombears and a small doughnut and my blood sugars were 6.6, I then went downstairs at 9:30pm and had a small portion of pasta and a chocolate bar. I tested my sugars before bed and they were 12.9… I’m at the GP tomorrow to be tested for diabetes but I’m so scared.

Why/how are you testing your blood sugar, if you aren’t diabetic? Have your test strips been stored correctly and did you have clean hands without soap residue, or did you use a CGM?

Untreated diabetes wouldn’t cause low blood sugar, and a single reading of 12.9 in someone who is stressed and unwell and has eaten a significant quantity of carbohydrate isn’t particularly concerning.

The accumulative effect of what you ate would raise your bg. Were you deliberately trying to raise it? What did hospital say as a follow up? T2 is a condition involving the management high blood sugars and hypos are very unusual. What equipment are you testing with and why? Even diagnosed T2 diabetics do not routinely test daily unless on insulin.
