Hi just after some advice please, I’ve been monitoring my morning blood sugar levels over the last week or so and every morning my levels are between 6.1 and 6.5, average is 6.4. taking the bloods before I eat or drink anything. Is this high and should I speak to the dr? My last hbac1 test was a couple of years ago and was 38. Thank you

A (lab tested) fasting glucose level of 7 or higher is indicative of diabetes, so no. Morning levels can be a little higher than the rest of the day in some people because as you begin to wake up your body preps you for action, releasing glucose stores to get you going before you eat. It’s called the dawn phenomenon.

Is there a reason you are testing your levels at this time? Do you have symptoms of diabetes? Of so you should see your gp to discuss repeating your HbA1c.

No thats normal range.

What's making you test?

How old are you? I think it is a good idea to keep an eye on blood glucose levels as one gets older, especially post-menopause, but I’m not sure I’d go as far as daily checking unless previously shown to be close to being pre-diabetic. However, it’s probably a good idea to get one’s HbA1c checked every couple of years or so.

NB: The Blood Sugar Solution by Dr Mark Hyman has a lot of useful information, including recipes for maintaining normal blood glucose levels.

It’s normal but the fact you’re testing suggests you’re worried so you need to speak to the doctor
