What have the medical professionals said as the HbA1C is a blood test so should have been obtained via a GP or the like?

I don’t know if levels for toddlers should be the same or different as levels for adults, that result for an adult would be perfect and not indicative of diabetes.

It is impossible to give you a full answer to this question, as there are lots of things that could impact this. Why was it tested in the first place? Does your child have an illness, or symptoms, or are they on medications? Has Your child been diagnosed with diabetes? Generally If they haven’t, then it’s a perfectly normal HbA1c. If yes they do have diabetes, then it might indicate that their glucose control is very tight, and they are possibly having a fair number of hypoglycaemic events.

There’s also the possibility that if your child has just been diagnosed, then it’s a “normal” reading, because their glucose levels have risen very quickly over a matter of days rather than weeks and weeks, so there wasn’t sufficient time for the elevated glucose levels to dramatically impact the HbA1c reading (as it is a test that looks at the average glucose level over the past 2-3 months).

Without knowing the full picture we can only give you the general answers, so you really need to discuss this with your Dr or nurse, as they will have the better knowledge of your child’s health, and can let you know if this level is ok for them.

So who is doing the tests? Are you getting them done by a professional or are you doing finger prick tests with a home kit?

gottalottodo · 14/07/2025 08:20

Ask whoever did the test? Hba1c is an average over 3 months, is this actually the test she has had or just a finger prick?

Fly1ngG1raffe · 14/07/2025 09:11

You need to ask the doctor who requested the test to interpret the result in a clinical context.

That said it’s within the normal range BUT HbA1c IS NOT an appropriate investigation when suspecting diabetes in a two year old. T1DM could present with a very normal HbA1c due to rapid onset, and therefore capillary blood glucose +/- random glucose much more appropriate.

By a professional not finger prick test

Did they just tell you the results and not the meaning? Do you have an appointment or can you call and ask?

Sandhyachitteti · 14/07/2025 13:10

Yes I have an appointment today
