88 year old type 1 diabetic (since age 6!) now has what seems like uncontrolled sugar levels ranging from 3 to HI on libra in a day. Was in hospital due to infection and they couldn’t get it to settle. Home under care and district nurse care and it’s still the same. Fully aware her time is limited. She has zero quality of life and would prefer to be “away”. Has anyone experienced this?

Given that this wasn't able to be controlled in hospital but they've been discharged, I wouldn't imagine that they're hugely concerned. I found the district nursing team to be especially useless when they were involving in my late Dad's care .... is there a specialist diabetic community nurse in your area? You could ask the GP surgery.

My Dad was insulin dependent type 2 when he was diagnosed with cancer aged 83. And his blood sugars became impossible to control - they tried several different combinations of insulin. In the end, they agreed to stop testing/dosing because his quality of life was so poor anyway.

Thanks for replying. Diabetic nurses changed her regime again and again but bottom line is nothing works. GP only interested if she vomiting or confused. I do wonder about them letting her go naturally.

Sadly I'd imagine there's some truth in that. But reaching the age of 88 as a type 1 is a pretty amazing feat in itself, though little consolation for you.
