High carb / low sugar

I’m prediabetic & trying to get my diet under control.
I’ve noticed that some foods are high carb but low sugar - are they to be avoided or does the low sugar make them ‘better’?

I signed up to the Second Nature app when I was pre-diabetic and it gave lots of advice and support. The NHS will pay for it in many areas. But to answer your question you need to lower all carbs, not just sugar.

Thank you, and I’ll look into the app.

Alll carbs need to be reduced.

Try and avoid anything that has been tampered with so to speak.

High protein natural food. Fish meat veg etc. Nothing processed. Cheese eggs. High fat food.

Many low fat options have fat stripped out and replaced with sugar.

You do need to reduce carbs, but you shouldn’t eliminate them entirely, look up Low GI foods. Carbs that are also high in fibre are lower GI so the darker/more wholegrain and seeded the better. Think rye bread rather than white bread. You also should be pairing carbs with fat or protein, so rye bread with scrambled eggs or avocado or peanut butter. That combination helps your body to more effectively break down the glucose you are taking in.

It's Hard, you do need carbs to fill you and for energy. Carbs though do need to be slow release, ie wholegrain, veggies with skin on.

With regard to sugars, I believe we can have 30g of 'free' sugars a day from healthy foods, ie fruit, veggies, milk, yogurtd, wholegrains. Any other sugars should be as limited as possible.
