Hello

I am taking my son to the doctor tomorrow as he has been drinking much more than usual and going to the toilet constantly(In the day)

He is autistic and it’s quite possible it’s habitual drinking but obviously need to get him tested asap just in case.

My question is he completely day at night and I’ve taken tested his urine sample a few times-spare strips at home which is clear.
Could this still be diabetes? I know no one can tell me for sure but hoping for a little reassurance. It will be very traumatic for him going to the doctor due his autism
and other needs, worried out of my mind 😔

If there’s no sugar or ketones in his urine it’s extremely unlikely to be diabetes but get him checked if you’re worried

Has he also lost some weight, increased appetite and tiredness?

If you can get to the GP asap that would be great. My daughter was dx completely out of the blue aged 4. Unquenchable thirst, and urinating every 40 mins or so. The GP did a very swift and professional finger prick test to check her blood glucose while chatting away to us and while I kept her very distracted and she barely noticed it.

I asked for a urine sample tube from receptionist as soon as we arrived as I knew she was bound to pee on arrival so was able to hand that to the GP so he could test that too and so he was able to be pretty sure within a few minutes.

Her blood glucose was 32mmol with very low ketones thankfully so when we transferred straight to kids ward in hospital she thankfully wasn’t dramatically unwell and in a sense we caught it ‘early’. The docs and nurses were experienced and fantastic with us.
She is 17 now, learning to drive, works a part time job while in school and manages so well despite the challenges. It’s something she has grown up with and hasn’t stopped her doing anything, just requires more advance planning. There are lots if support groups and lots of families managing T1D and autism together so if you need to, please reach out.

Hopefully it won’t be serious and your son will feel better soon but you are wise to take it seriously and get him checked.

Thank you both. He’s not tired or increased appetite but possibly lost a little weight, it’s hard to say. Also his skin is very dry and has been itching but that could just be the cold weather
