Got HbA1c down to 39 but now it’s up to 49 :-((

Was diagnosed as pre diabetic in January with HbA1c of 45. GP will test again next Jan.

Worked hard to get it down and did a private test in June which came back at 39. I was really happy with that but unfortunately took my eye completely off the ball and have now done another private test which has come back at 49. Neither of those private test results have been reported to the GP.

i think I know what I need to do but just wanted a bit of sympathy and empathy. It has been a really traumatic year with unexpected bereavement among other things. I know I need to get back on it and I did expect a higher result but not that high. If the GP had it would then they class me as diabetic with no going back??

My GP test will be in January so I have time to bring it down again but know it will be difficult. Maybe this is the shock I needed, fingers crossed.

Any positive takes of getting back under control would be very welcome.

thanks for reading.

When I had a high blood test ( just into the diabetic range) the surgery made me do another one a couple of weeks later and it went down to low prediabetic. Having said that, it's likely it will give you the motivation to eat better if you assume the test is correct. Being pre diabetic was a huge motivation for me to lose weight, exercise more and give up sugar. I used Slimpod and also went on an NHS prediabetic course. You might want to ask about that as it's very informative about food choices. Good luck.

Thank you @Lovelyview
It’s interesting to see that yours changed so much in such a short time.

The impression I got was that the high one was inaccurate rather than I reduced it quickly. But I did give up sugar straight away.

Ah that may be a better explanation. I do wonder about different labs doing these tests but I know I have been really lapse over the last few months and a bit complacent after the other good test.

I'm sure you can bring it down again, 🙂

Mounjaro will fix it.

Personally I'd go hardcore keto for a fixed period and then gradually and slowly reintroduce healthy wholegrain carbs. And also increase your exercise. You don't need to be running marathons, but try to get out walking particularly after meals. Even 15 minutes would help.

You could just drop to low carb/no sugar and exercise but I think the hardcore gets rid of the cravings more easily and quickly and makes lower carb easier to maintain.

Things like stress, ill heath etc also increase your blood sugars ime.

It's easy to become obsessed, but I did find a finger prick test and strips, which are reasonable price from amazon, useful in identifying things that my body didn't react well to. A continuous blood glucose monitor would do that better but can work out expensive.

Walker1178 · 20/09/2024 14:05

A Hba1c test measures the glucose levels in your red blood cells which on average live for around 120 days so you absolutely can make a difference now to a January test.

It sounds very much like you already know what to do but I would say make sure it’s sustainable. The results from your next test will be responsible for deciding a plan going forward, make sure it’s accurate!

A lot of people have had anomalous results since earlier this year - it turned out to be a faulty testing machine cock-up, so if you live anywhere within about 40 miles of Luton, then get re-tested.
