Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes

Meeplebeen · 07/09/2024 15:42

I'm overweight (BMI is 33) and got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a year ago. I've lost a stone but am stuck now. I've tried metformin and metformin extended release but if i take the full dose i still get gastric side effects which effects my confidence and stops me from going out in case i have a sudden attack of diarrhea. I also have adhd and despie all my best efforts, sometimes i forget to take it. I have a binge eating disorder related to my adhd that therapy hasn't helped. When i got diagnosed the nurse mentioned maybe trying mounjaro - i think id like to try it as i won't have to remember to take it twice a day but worried about side effects too.

Has anyone gone from metformin to mounjaro for diabetes? How did it go?

BMI is 33 also, HbA1c was 86 last bloods, and I'm on Metformin Prolonged-release 1000mg and just started Mounjaro last week.

Like yourself, I'm not the best at taking my medication but due to work commitments, It's hard to keep a routine for meals, and unfortunately I work in food retail and I graze through the day or binge-eat when home.

A big takeaway from my experience with Mounjaro is it truly has reduced my appetite and cravings, which in turn has really allowed me to see food as fuel rather than a source of pleasure or something to overindulge with.

I'd like more time with Mounjaro before really recommending it, but right now It's almost like my stomach is no longer wired to my brain. I'm down 4kg's in a week, and I've barely touched any fizzy drinks (Pepsi Max), which is my achilles' heel usually, but I just don't have any desire towards it.

I have to remember to eat, rather than yearning to eat, and I've been in a controlled calorie deficit monitoring it through NutraCheck App just to keep tabs, I keep drinking water, but I'm not all that thirsty either but people have recommended to keep hydrated and maybe had a headache the first day because I hadn't been.

What I've noticed with less food comes less toilet breaks, but also less of the highly processed foods I am usually drawn towards has made such a difference to my gut health and not feeling lethargic or bloated either.

Mounjaro feels a game changer for my diabetes in terms of allowing me to kick in better habits without urges pulling at me. I've not had any nasty side effects as yet and feel positive towards seeing the results of my next bloods.

Mounjaro is a bit pricey as I can't get it through the NHS in Scotland, but I'm spending less on foods of convenience which in turn would help with my health.

If anyone that reads is thinking to start on Mounjaro I would recommend MedExpress as a good chemist, they provided a sharps bin with the first order and their emails have been reassuring around how to take it and what to expect etc. I stood not wanting to inject myself for a good 10mins....before biting the bullet after carefully studying what they sent through. They price match with other places and offer an initial £40 discount if you have a referral code from a friend, and your friend gets £40 off their next order too which helps.

£40 off Mounjaro/Wegovy at Med Express - Use referral code: AA61GN

I'll try and remember to post back my HbA1c in a few months.

I think mounjaro is in addition to rather than instead of metformin at least until your weight comes down and your diabetes (hopefully) reverts to pre diabetes.
I’ve lost about 10lbs in five months or so (a slow loser) but not had my hba1c checked again since starting.
The one thing to be aware of is that mounjaro can cause awful side effects as you move up the doses. I’m on 7.5 at the moment and having bad indigestion, I vomit around once a week and have occasional diarrhoea. Yesterday I met a friend at Costa and had a sausage bap - which was probably stupid as my stomach was already feeling a bit unsettled - and barely made it home before having to bolt for the toilet.
I do think though that as I won’t eat veg and not much fruit, I don’t do myself any favours by eating too much high cal or high fat foods.
I’m supposed to be going out for lunch today and tomorrow (very rare for me, it’s just the way it is this week with various celebrations) and I’m wondering how to navigate it and just have something small or plain.

Very good point. Just to add to my OG post. I'm on the lowest dose so far and side effects wise I could be yet to experience things as papergirl has, but I've already ordered the next dosage higher.

I have a friend that hadnt upped the dosage on the time line the pharmacy set out for fear of side effects but she said she regretted it as found her appetite was returning.

Personally I expect to not enjoy bathroom breaks if I'm in a calorie deficit but can mitigate if eating better.... But I hope I don't have to run to a toilet or have accidents though I'll do my best to avoid triggering food.

I was offered MJ at my diabetic review, I’m on my third week at 2.5 I also take Metformin and Jardiance. I’ve had the odd bout of diarrhoea but nothing else. I’ve lost 10lbs so far. I’m eating far healthier, intermittent fasting and counting my calories (not always on a weekend)
I go onto 5mg in 2 weeks. I’m really hoping my HBA1C has reduced at my next review in 2-3 months.

I went on to Metformin about 15 years ago and the first 18 months were the worst for side effects. I'm on a much higher dose now but don't have any side effects at all unless I leave it too long after a meal to take it. I have my tablet box with me at meals so that I remember, and I split the dose into two so take it with lunch and dinner. The system that I use is to have three weekly tablet boxes like this www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09WQZ3P9L/ref=sspa_dk_detail_3?pd_rd_i=B09WQZ3P9L&pd_rd_w=SvLFm&content-id=amzn1.sym.79ce6a00-f538-43a3-9469-172619270935&pf_rd_p=79ce6a00-f538-43a3-9469-172619270935&pf_rd_r=C4GQHG9B5Y7E2P5S5015&pd_rd_wg=LgUZL&pd_rd_r=afea9eb2-4d40-43bf-a99f-67b76a89d106&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWxfdGhlbWF0aWM&th=1 I fill the three boxes, then when I have used up the last day I fill one more box and reorder my prescription. I use up the single box and then start again by filling three week's worth with the new prescription.

I take Ozempic too which has been helpful and I lost about 12 kg, although that has levelled off now but I am overweight rather than obese (by BMI) and I'm not hungry all the time. It can give me acid reflux when I'm lying down so I take something for that for the first three nights after I inject and make sure I have dinner early so I'm not going to bed on a full stomach. I have occasionally had a burping problem but no nausea fortunately.

I've just been prescribed Mounjaro. I've been on metformin for about three years, but my blood sugar suddenly went up. I was prescribed dapagliflozin but had terrible side effects from it, and saw my GP today and she has prescribed the injections. I have to see the nurse on Friday to be shown how to administer it. My BMI is 33. Nervous but excited about it.

InfoSecInTheCity · 10/12/2024 23:15

It's been wonderful for me.

I was only diagnosed with T2 in August with a HbA1C of 11% (97 n/Mol) and was started immediately on insulin and metformin. Think I got lucky with Diabetes nurse because when I asked about MJ at the beginning of September she said yes straight away and prescribed it that day.

I was using a Freestyle Libre CGM so noticed within a few days that my sugars were going low and was advised to reduce then stop the insulin within a couple of weeks of starting MJ. I've since reduced from 2000mg metformin a day to just one slow release tablet in the morning.

Since my first dose 5th Sept I've lost 35lb and when HbA1C was retested at end of October it was down to 7.2% (55 n/Mol). Will be tested again end of Jan and hoping to be below 6.5%.

Gone from obese to overweight and I have 19lbs to go to get into the healthy BMI range.

I've had no side effects at all, I have stayed at 5mg though as that the recommended dose for diabetes treatment rather than moving up every 4 weeks. They will reassess if it stops working. I eat high protein, lots of fibre in the form of veg grown above ground and very low carb.

CJStarbuck · 18/02/2025 20:26

So I wanted to come back and share. My bloods were taken January 14th and came back as non-diabetic with HbA1c at 33 (was 86 in Oct 24), without taking Metformin since first week of November.

I had an all-inclusive holiday to the Canary Islands for two weeks and got this news just before I left. I was straight on the phone to a few loved ones to tell them, I just wanted to share the news with my nearest and dearest and couldn't have been more full of joy going into a holiday hearing I had turned a corner in my health.

I took my Mounjaro with me and injected on holiday but still managed to eat frequently albeit not to the quantity I would usually have inhaled food while going AI. I really have changed my perceptions of food while on the injections and no longer suffer food noise/hunger leading to binge eating and fewer bad choices. I prepared myself I would be a few KG's more on return from holiday but I had actually lost while away! I did do a lot of walking to be fair but you don't think that its possible to weigh less at the end of a relaxing holiday!

I'm down from 104kg in October (BMI:33) to 88.4kg (BMI:28.9) in February with the target to be at 78.8kg by end of May though I've started to obsess less with my daily weight and just weighing myself the morning after evening injections to know what direction I'm going.

I felt so confident in myself on holiday and was in the pool most days and enjoyed a few hikes up the hills and for the first time in a very long time I didn't feel self conscious about the way I looked and sought people out. I've now got a wee obsession with Cologne and aftershaves having spent an afternoon in the Spanish Fragrance shops and I just take so much more pride in my appearance with my growing confidence and the many compliments I'm receiving for all manner of things I'd never have believed. My sitting heart rate has vastly improved with the loss of weight and I love looking at my Samsung watch these days and not seeing some of those high scores.

I just feel so happy and content right now. Thought I'd send that into the internet void. :D What made me think to come back was someone used my MedExpress code and I couldn't for the life of me think where I had shared this to that a personal friend wasn't the one using it. Thank you internet stranger for using my referral code and letting me save some pennies!

I was on Metformin quite happily for several years and then my blood sugars spiked, so my GP put me on to dapagliflozin. I couldn't tolerate that at all - constant thrush and urine infections. So in November my GP prescribed Mounjaro. I've tolerated it well and my blood sugar is under control now. I do still take Metformin as well though, but I think some do take it on its own with good results. My GP was very enthusiastic about the results she'd seen from people on Mounjaro.

oneeggisunoeuf · 18/02/2025 21:18

Oh, and I've lost one and a half stones since starting, on top of the stone I'd already lost by traditional methods.
