3 year old showing signs of diabetes??

Hi,

For the past 2 weeks my partner and i have noticed our 3 year old son is drinking a lot more than his usual. We’ve also noticed how fast he is drinking. We give him a 450ml bottle which he drinks within 10 minute's and then asks for another almost immediately. He usually only drinks around 2-3 bottles of fluid per day, but this has gone up to 3-5. He has also been asking for milk more so than he would normally (not sure if this has any relevance).

After noticing this my partner and i were then thinking of other things we’d notice but bushed off. He is still in nappies and has been leaking almost every morning which isnt normal for him but because he is drinking more we left it. The past 3 days ive been changing him around 2am as he has leaked then his nappy is full again by 7am.
He nappy area has also been a bit sore, and hes been complaining that his penis is sore and messing with it.

Our son was premature (born 9 weeks early) and has also struggled with his immune system. He takes a lot longer to get over common illnesses then the average child his age. His weight is within range but he isnt a very big child. One thing we have brushed off but are now questioning is that he is randomly unwell, for example he has a temperature or ear ache for 12-24hrs then is fine. But we put this down to his immune system being low.

Are his dad and i being paranoid or could this be something??

Ps. i have contacted the doctors about this and he has an appointment in 3 days but they have said they are only doing a urine dip test. No blood test.

@Musicaltheatremum absolutely. They are 'fine' until they really are not!

EnoughIsTooMuchAlready · 10/07/2024 11:01

Thing is - if you're worries are unfounded then it's no big deal. If they are, and you ignore it, you risk him being very ill.

You have that gut feeling for a reason, there is something going on, you just don't know what, or how serious. Tbh I'd be going to a&e with him.

longdistanceclaraclara · 10/07/2024 11:02

I'd go to a&e, especially given family history.

Dolly567 · 10/07/2024 11:06

You can get those dip tests in store, I think they should have booked him in straight away. I have two siblings with type 1 fingers crossed for you

mitogoshi · 10/07/2024 12:34

Has he had any viruses recently, especially sore throats, seems to be that everyone I know who is type 1 had a persistent fever etc just before (as in a week or so). I was actually with my friends dc when she was lethargic but guzzling drinks, I drove them to the hospital (it was too similar to another friend basically) and she was diagnosed within the hour.

Emmacb82 · 10/07/2024 12:42

I would bypass the GP and take him to A+E. Too many GPs will dismiss diabetes or will refer you for a fasting blood test which is not the way to diagnose it. He needs a urine dip and a blood sugar today, that is all that is needed to diagnose it. Children will compensate for only so long before they will go into DKA so I echo other posters and please get him seen properly today. Hope all is ok.

T1 here. Definitely get the finger pricker from the pharmacy and do it yourself as soon as you can. He won't feel unwell until DKA. Although he may be very tired and lethargic. I was diagnosed in summer and we'd all assumed I was thirsty because it was hot. But the amount of water was just next level. I have a 3yo and he definitely doesn't drink that much when it's hot. Please don't worry - the option for managing T1D these days are amazing.

Jean24601Valjean · 10/07/2024 13:10

Or if it's quicker than getting to a pharmacy yes just go to A+E. Depends on the wait times. Maybe do both!

ElphabaFlies · 10/07/2024 13:12

T1 mum to a T1 child. It would be completely acceptable to go to A&E today. Explain he has excessive thirst and urination and you are concerned about T1D. Don't mess about with getting your own kit, or waiting for the GP.

Hope you got on ok yesterday & all good. If there is a Type 1 diagnosis there are lots of great support groups & pages to help.

Jjc23 · 12/07/2024 17:40

Thank you to everyone who commented! I really appreciate all the advice.

Update - We saw our GP yesterday, who did a urine dipstick which showed no glucose.
She has referred us to the hospital for a blood test as they do not do them on children at my GP surgery. I asked if she could do a finger prick on him and she refused as she is sending him for a full blood test sometime next week.
He seems ok at the minute, symptoms haven’t changed but i just can’t shake this feeling that something is going on his body that we are unaware of.

Does the blood form say hba1c?

I certainly hope not, as in children that should only be used for monitoring known diabetes, tends to be far too late to change to be used to diagnose diabetes in children. Uncomfortable that they've not done a finger prick.

I wasn’t too happy about it either but because he is well she didnt seem too concerned. We have family history of diabetes as well as his symptoms which is why she is referring us to the hospital. I think im just worried he is going to become unwell before we are seen.
His history with past illnesses isnt great, hence my anxiety about this whole situation.

Then not to be rude, why don’t you just take him to a+e? Plenty of people with experience of type 1 have said that. So many GPs will refer children for fasting bloods to diagnose it which is so wrong. If there’s a slight possibility that he could have it, you want it seen and sorted asap.

Ok, keep an eye on that then. I'm not sure if a pharmacist could do a quick urine test for you to put your mind at rest, it might be worth popping in and asking as 3 days is a while to wait. Hopefully it's nothing to worry about, I know the weather hasn't been very warm but little ones running about can get hot and thirsty.

I hope its sorted now ,finger prick tests take seconds ,and can diagnose immediately I can't understand why a,GP wouldn't do that
My Son was in DKA on diagnosis and it was a very scary time.
