Hiya

I'm just starting to suspect I have diabetes and I'm in the process of getting an appointment etc. So today I ate around about 2-3 hours ago (my first meal as I was working and couldn't stop) I had a jacket spud with a tiny bit of butter and seasoning. I have now suddenly got the shakes and feel anxious and light headed! I've taken a reading on my glucose monitor and it's come up 4.5mmol, which I thought was normal. But why the awful shakes and light headed ness which I get on a regular basis but only now I've started to test. I am old and fat btw 🤣

Doesn't sound like diabetes to be honest but certainly needs checking out. Hope the appointment goes well.

Auntiesitting · 13/02/2024 17:33

What are your pre meal or first thing in the morning glucose levels like? Are they generally higher than that?

It might be worth testing before eating a similar meal, then testing at 30, 60 and 120 minutes to see what your response is to a big carbohydrate bolus. You might be getting a big, slightly delayed insulin surge that is leading to a quick drop in your glucose level, meaning you have the sensation of a hypo even though your level is perfectly normal. If your body is used to a slightly high glucose level (no idea if that is the case for you), then a sudden normal reading is a drop, and so the body triggers a hypo response as a warning that something isn’t it’s “norm”.

Thanks for the replies.

Today my cgm kit has arrived so I'll be putting that on tonight. I'm quite excited! I'll recreate today's conditions tomorrow and see what the monitor thinks.

Are we talking Type 1 or 2 here?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 13/02/2024 17:57

You have a continuous glucose monitor?
4.5 is low normal especially 2 hours after eating
The symptoms you mention could be due to hypoglycaemia. Certainly not high blood glucose which is more likely on diagnosis
Have you actually been diagnosed with T1 or T2?

sparklefart · 13/02/2024 20:13

No idea of type 1 or 2 just starting to look into it.

Yes I've just strapped on the glucose monitor and waiting for it to start working. I've had no diagnosis just awaiting an appointment with the GP.

Maybe some protein with the spud might have helped. I'd still be starving if that's all I'd had!

PotatoFan · 13/02/2024 21:18

I really wouldn't advise a CGM, you've wasted your money buying that as you're not going to understand how to interpret the trends, and it can't be used for diagnosis of diabetes.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 13/02/2024 21:31

If GP is concerned, he will order an hba1c blood test which will show your blood glucose trends over the last 3 months so I agree the CGM is unnecessary.
Blood glucose varies without Diabetes normally
Do you have a family history of Diabetes?

Allsizes8to14 · 13/02/2024 21:37

I’d suggest this is unlikely to indicate diabetes, as undiagnosed diabetic blood sugar would usually be high and 4.5 is the lower end of normal 🤔 I suspect it was blood sugar dropping quickly after the increase caused by the carbs in the potato. Defo see GP for Hba1c bloods if concerned and go from there

sparklefart · 13/02/2024 23:09

Thanks I do appreciate all the advice and I will be seeing the GP specifically about diabetes etc. I work quite a physical job and getting the shakes in the afternoon is having quite a debilitating effect on me. I wanted to see out of interest what was going on and atm my reading is sitting at 4.6mmol 3 hours after food. So if I don't eat until 1/2pm tomorrow I suspect that's why I'm getting the shakes. I get very bad shakes and trembles, very cold and tired very suddenly. That reminds me to eat but quite often I'm not hungry.

I'm just surprised as people who do fasting don't eat for upto 16 hours and shout about the benefits. I wish this was me. Anyway in an effort to start looking at my health and lessen my fatigue I hope this app will teach me to each at better intervals.

I really am a newbie to all this and if I am cleared of diabetes I think I will have to start taking my nutrition seriously.

Thanks for your help!

4.6 is a completely normal blood sugar reading though, it wouldn’t cause the shakes. Non diabetics regularly go down to the 3s no problem at all.

romdowa · 14/02/2024 06:03

4.5 3 hours after eating food is definitely not a sign of diabetes. Your blood sugars would be high after food if you where an untreated diabetic. It is possible to get hypos without being a diabetic but 4.5 isn't a hypo either.

You will need to take your nutrition far more seriously if you are diagnosed with it.

Franticbutterfly · 14/02/2024 16:18

Probably wouldn't have happened if you had had protein with it.

idontlikealdi · 14/02/2024 16:22

I don't think you have diabetes. The CGM seems a bit of a step without seeing a Dr.

LIZS · 14/02/2024 16:35

4.5 is normal but not eating until late morning is not ideal . Little and often might be better for you. Do you have anxiety that you are going to the trouble of ordering a cgm etc.

Auntiesitting · 17/02/2024 06:28

What sort of levels and patterns in your readings are you seeing with your cgm @sparklefart ?
